Airfare prices may be set to increase in 2006, as airlines struggle with rising fuel costs and not enough passengers. The hardest hit are the smaller, budget airlines, such as Independence Air, which closed its doors in the first week of January.

From that shutdown alone, airfare experts say fares in many of the 30 cities previously served by Independence Air could double or even triple.

“We’re going to learn the true meaning of ’sky high,’ “said airline consumer expert Tom Parsons, CEO of Bestfares.com in a USA Today report.

But there is good news for travelers — with a little know-how, you can save big on airfares. Top Eight Money-Saving Airfare Tips

1. Use an ethnic travel agent if flying internationally.
Travel agents in ethnic neighborhoods tend to cater to their home ethnicity. They buy space on flights in bulk and get the best deals for that crowd. So if you are flying to China, for example, seek out a travel agent in Chinatown.

2. Be flexible.
The least expensive days to fly are typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can save even more if you’re willing to take a red-eye or very early morning flight, or one with a stop or two. If you can risk not being able to find tickets, you can try waiting until the very last minute. Many airlines offer last-minute promotional rates … but only if seats are left open.

3. Opt for e-tickets.
Whenever possible, always choose the electronic ticket option. Most travel agents charge a fee to deliver paper tickets.

4. Buy tickets through a consolidator.
Consolidators buy blocks of tickets and sell them at a discounted rate in order to help airlines fill up seats. You can find “Ticket Consolidators” in your newspaper’s travel section or online at sites like Hotwire.com, Onetravel.com and Lowestfare.com. Be aware that these tickets may have more restrictions than others.

5. Use an alternative airport.
Flying to an airport that is 30-40 minutes away from your destination can save you up to 50 percent on a flight. For instance, flying into Baltimore instead of Washington D.C., Oakland instead of San Francisco, or Rockford instead of Chicago.

6. Check fares on low-cost airlines.
Although they may not be featured on major travel Web sites, airlines like JetBlue, Southwest and American Trans Air often offer lower fares and better promotions than competitors. Fly eight round-trips on Southwest, for instance, and the ninth is free. However, the disadvantage is that their travel areas are much more limited.

7. Check online.
Ticket prices can be cut by 10 percent or more when purchased online. Many online travel sites also offer package deals for vacations that include flights, hotel and car rentals. Be sure to shop around though, as prices vary widely by site. Check online specials not only for individual airlines but also at sites such as Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, and Orbitz.com.

8. Do your homework, then act fast.
Once you get an idea of what a good price is for your particular flight needs, be prepared to act fast. Airfares change dramatically, even from day to day, so if you see a price you like, buy it!

My wife and I met with a woman a few years ago when she was contemplating moving to Guanajuato. She asked me what I thought Americans grossly underestimated in their plotting to move to Guanajuato. What immediately popped into my head was: Noise! Americans think they will have no problem dealing with the noise and most believe I exaggerate this.

Well, two years after this meeting, we saw her on the street. I took that opportunity to ask her, “What has been the most difficult thing with which you’ve struggled in your adapting?”

Her answer was swift: Noise! “I completely underestimated the noise.”

Let me just say that to one degree or another, I think I may finally be getting why Gringos form Gated Communities when they move to Mexican towns—the noise! Because we were not born and raised in a country in which people think nothing of having a party outside your bedroom window, blowing off fireworks, screeching, or having a general riot, we simply do not have the wherewithal to withstand what borders on the supernatural for Mexicans. We plainly do not have the ability to withstand the decibel equivalent of a small, tactical nuclear weapon going off outside where we sleep. This is, by the way, what I mean when I say fireworks. They don’t set off fireworks but bombs of tactical weapon caliber.

At least with an enclave full of fellow countrymen, you would sleep. That would be the thing you would have in common: Sleep!

Last night, at about 4:45 a.m., someone decided to zoom past our bedroom window on a motorcycle. Our house is on the dead-end street, unlike the others that are elevated on the top of stair-accessed mounds. We are directly on the street. Someone thought it appropriate to rev his motor as though doing so would make his bike work better or at least make him feel very macho for have wakened the gringos.

Not more than ten minutes after motor-Mexican zoomed off into the night, a carload of very intoxicated Mexicans drove up and attempted to park their gigantic SUV (I hate SUV’s) into a parking slot designed for a VW bug. They had to go forward then backwards about three million times before being able to complete this impossible parking task. All the while, they were filling up our bedroom, even through I closed the window, with carbon monoxide.

Needless to say, we were up.

Their party, which must have been quite a do since they were dressed formally, was over but they weren’t finished partying. They stumbled up the stairs to apartments above us and carried on their all-night celebration until one the following afternoon.

Who knows what was happening (and who cares)? But, it continued happening right at our house, where we live, in a Mexican neighborhood. It is 2:02 p.m. and just now we are laying our heads down to sleep:

Now we lay our heads to sleep
We pray to God that this will keep
Cause’ if doesn’t and we wake
I really fear what course we’ll take.

I will look first for a shoe
But will quickly know this won’t do
So then I’ll look for a bat
With which to smash those dirty rats.

I’ll send them flying for all that buying
Gallons of tequila that now won’t heal ‘em
They’ll have to run for their lives
And next time think twice.

Before causing this gringo all this strife!

The good thing about cruise is that is all inclusive. That means you get cabin stay, shipboard entertainment, buffets treat, and lots more for the price you pay for a cruise ticket. It’s convenient, stress free and a good way to spend your vacation.

But there’s always something you need to keep in mind – the extras that can creep into your cruise budget which you may not have plan for.

Here’s a rundown of the list of things which is usually not included in your cruise package. Remember to keep tabs on these costs before you swell your holiday bill.

Service Tips

Tipping the crew is a usual practice when it comes to cruising. So who should you tip and how much should you set aside? Generally crew service staffs like waiters, room stewards and bus person are entitled for a small service charge. Bartenders are usually out of the picture as there is already a service gratuity inbuilt into your drink price. Prepare about seventy to one hundred bucks for the entire cruise stay, more if you need to tip for extras.

Shore Excursion

Steer clear from unnecessary expenditures each time you for a sightseeing shore excursions. Costs like admission fees, souvenirs, mountain biking trips adds up easily and can push up your entire travel budget significantly if you are not careful.

Taxes

Some cruise liners do not add up taxes or port charges into your total fare. Therefore, remember to check this beforehand so that you know how much you are paying for. Some brochures may cover this in fine print, so read them carefully before you commit yourself.

Spending on Ship

Unsurprisingly, most cruisers spend most of their money on board the cruise ship itself. Cruise liners are always trying to sell you something, offering you convenience, extravagance and luxury treats. Things like babysitting services, fancy dining, massages and cruise liner souvenirs can sadden your wallet from five bucks to one hundred bucks easily, depending on the services and things you opt for.

When you think of the word vacation, what comes to your mind? Do you think about sitting around a campfire, watching the shadows bounce off of the trees or perhaps do you think about speeding down a snowy slope on a set of skis? I know that vacations are a very personal thing, and for most people they simply do what they enjoy, or else it wouldn’t be much of a vacation at all. Did you, however, ever consider going to an all inclusive vacation resort?

For me, an all inclusive resort spells a vacation wonderland. It has everything I could ever want in a vacation and it is flexible enough to give you all the extras that you could hope for. For example, if you were to take a romantic vacation at one of the Sandals resorts you could expect to be treated like royalty. You could sit on the sandy beach, drinking free premium cocktails and dreaming about what free adventure you were going to do next. Now not all vacations can live up to the Sandals package but there are quite a few that will give you so much that they can’t be considered anything but all inclusive.

You may also enjoy taking a mountain vacation at an all inclusive lodge. This is a great option and you will no doubt enjoy all that it has to offer. My wife and I took a vacation at an all inclusive lodge in Pennsylvania and we had a wonderful time. They offered everything from golf and fishing to skeet shooting. It was great fun to wake up every morning in such a beautiful surrounding and know that you could basically do anything you wanted and it was included right in with the vacation package.

So from the seas to the mountains, from the ski slopes to the sandy beaches, all inclusive vacations offer you much more of what you could get on your own. Take them up on their offers and you will soon find that you are enjoying your vacation more and more with each passing day.

You are thinking to buy for your family a vacation home but you don’t know exactly what investment to make. Should you be interested in timeshares or in condo hotels? Well, here are some facts about these vacation homes options. This info may be helpful in making a choice that suits you.

First of all, let’s discuss the flexibility of using the suit aspect. A timeshares is offering you a relatively limited freedom of using it. It means that you have paid to use your vacation home only for a certain period of time every year. You can’t change the period of time, so you have little options of enjoying your vacation home. But, when it comes to a condo hotel, you can enjoy it whenever you want provided the fact that you will not make it your permanent home.

The facilities aspect should also be taken into consideration when buying a vacation home. The timeshares usually have a shared swimming pool and some other common areas. Condo hotels offer you full access to all the facilities the hotel is normally offering to his guests: a swimming pool, restaurants, bars, an on-site spa or a gym centre.

Also look at the furnishings provided by each type of property. The timeshares’ furnishings depend on individual development. You will pay for the furnishing when you buy the entire property. A condo hotel is offering you high-tech appliances, high-end furniture and fixtures that are usually chosen by an interior designer. The quality of the furnishing is equal to the quality of all the facilities and services provided by a high-class hotel. And the price is also included in the purchasing value of the property.

The services issue may be one of the most important reasons for choosing on a certain property. When it comes to timeshares, you deal with the housekeeping issues during the vacation. A condo hotel is providing you full access to room service, valet, concierge or maintenance services. So no worries about who’s making the bed!

The location of these properties is also important. Both properties are placed in popular resorts.

And here it comes the most important issues: money. The timeshares have different prices, depending on the quality and comfort, but they are definitely much cheaper than a condo hotel suit. On the other hand you won’t be getting any revenue for the weeks when you will not be using your property. A condo hotel suit is more expensive but it also brings you money as you can introduce it into the hotel’s rental programme. The income will be shared with the hotel.

You have now a lot of reasons for buying a condo hotel or a timeshares. Your decision depends entirely to your needs and budget.

Once you’ve decided which items you need for your outdoor adventures, reading camping gear reviews is a great way to compare different product features and prices. There are a number of excellent outdoor review sites on the Web and you can find out the details on almost any product with the click of a mouse.

Camping gear reviews are available for all the well known brands and even some more obscure ones. You can read up on a diverse range of products including tents and tarps, backpacks, clothes, sleeping bags, camping stoves, pocket knives, first aid supplies, lanterns, GPS systems, 2-way radios and other high-tech gadgets suitable for the outdoor enthusiast.

Camping gear reviews enable you to compare the features of several different products in different price ranges with very little fuss. This means that you can browse items in the comfort of your own home and take your time making up your mind about the items that best suit you. There is no danger of being pressurized in-store when you take the time to review each item before you leave your home.

Several web sites offer camping gear reviews written by consumers. This is a great way to explore the pros and cons of a product. There are also sites that offer independent reviews written by experts in the field. These are reviews that are not paid for by the manufacturer of the product.

This is a great way to uncover the truth about the advantages and disadvantages of a product. When consulting reviews for different products don’t search based on price alone. There are often products that are only slightly more expensive but provide superior quality and features which enhance your camping experience. Don’t be tempted to buy the cheapest items.

Even if you’re working within a budget search items that are in a tier above what you think you are willing to pay. You may be surprised at how you can actually save money buying a better quality product. Use the camping gear reviews to find out what the positives and negatives of each product are and weigh them against each other to choose the one that best suits you.

Camping can be a great experience for the whole family. There is nothing quite like traveling into the wilderness and communing with the natural world. If you’re a first time camper you will probably need around $600 for basic camping gear. Use camping gear reviews to determine how much of the budget should be allocated to each item.

Use online camping gear reviews to work out how much you should set aside for your tent, rainfly and tarp, bedding, kitchen utensils, stove, lantern etc. This makes buying your first camping equipment easier and much more cost effective. Try to avoid manufacturer reviews as these might not tell you the whole story. Rather choose independent and consumer reviews but bear in mind that these might also be subject to bias.

So you’ve already decided that you want your family to stay in a vacation rental during your next trip. You like the space these homes provide, you like the amenities they offer, and most of all, you like the price. Regardless of where you vacation, however, there are certain things you should always look for when renting a vacation home.

The most important factor is a good rental company. After all, no vacation goes exactly as planned, and it’s important to have a supportive team in your corner, able to take over in case any mishaps arise. In the age of Internet booking, it’s easy for owners to rent their own home, but renting directly through an owner can be risky. Generally, homeowners don’t have the experience to deal with unexpected problems. Management companies, of course, deal with problems on a daily basis, and are equipped with the vendors, policies, and employees to take care of things efficiently. Additionally, rental companies take credit cards, which is often a safer and more efficient way to book a home. These points are key, because not only is the property manager going to make sure your vacation goes smoothly, but his job is also to make sure your transactions go smoothly. Having a rental agent you can trust will rid you of any anxieties—before, during, and after your stay. A rental company with an established reputation is usually a vacationer’s safest bet.

A quality website is crucial when searching for a vacation home. Often a traveler won’t be able to see the home before arriving for the vacation, so a website is the only way you can get a feel for the company, the property, and the service you’ll be receiving. Make sure the company you use has a clear website so you’re not zapped by hidden charges, smoking policies, or pet problems. Good online pictures are also important. Written descriptions can be misleading, and the right angles will always hide the ugly chair or cramped bathroom. Look for websites that provide online tours, 360-degree views, or several pictures of the same home to be sure you’re getting what you want.

Be honest with your rental agent about what you’re looking for in a home, whether it’s a pool, a great view, or a place without stairs. It’s also important to tell them exactly how many people are in your party and if you’ll be bringing any animals. Never book a home thinking you can sneak in a pet or cram in an extra person—the deposit you lose will certainly cost more than the additional bedroom or pet kennel. On the same note, know what amenities are important to you and what you can live without. If you need a pet-friendly home, don’t settle, but do be a little flexible; hairdryers and computers aren’t standard amenities.

Before you book your vacation home, get a little familiar with the area you’ll be staying in. After all, a home may be beautiful online, but if it’s forty-five miles away from the nearest city, your trip may not be as enjoyable as you’d hoped. Call your rental agent and ask how close you’ll be to the main attractions. Is there a grocery store nearby? Is there any nightlife within walking distance? Taking a look at the city’s chamber of commerce website will give you a great feel for the neighborhood. Not only will this information help your vacation go more smoothly, you’ll also have more things to look forward to!

Once you’ve decided on the home you’d like to rent, pay attention to the booking details. A good rental company will be upfront with you about fees, taxes, deposit returns, and policies. Be sure you’ve had all your questions answered before you sign anything. Some questions you may want to ask before you book:

What if my flight comes in after your office has closed?
What is the cancellation policy?
Is housekeeping available?
Is there a deposit or will charges be billed to my credit card?
How many parking spaces are available to me?
Are laundry facilities available?

When your questions are answered, your contracts are signed, and your itinerary is set, all you’ll have left to do is pack!

There is a huge variety of things to do within the small Kingdom of Swaziland. You will have great fun exploring the beauty and rich heritage of Swaziland and its warm people.

Relax and enjoy the spectacular Reed Dance which takes place in late August or early September and is a ceremony that attracts young maidens from all over the Kingdom, providing the opportunity to honor the Queen Mother. Most participants are in their teenage years, although some of the girls are younger.

During the first week, they gather reeds; the day of the Umhlanga begins with bathing and grooming before appearing before the King and Queen Mother. The girls wear short beaded skirts with anklets, bracelets and jewellery and colorful sashes. The royal princesses wear red feathers in their hair and lead the maidens to perform before the King and Queen. The King often chooses a new wife from among the participating maidens; watch teams of men and boys perform the energetic Sibhaca Dance which is quite a spectacle and watch the King of Swaziland as he takes part in the Incwala Ceremony.

The lncwala, or first fruits ceremony, in which the King plays a dominant role, is the most sacred of Swazi rituals. It is held in December or January on a date chosen by astrologers in conjunction with the phases of the moon. The ritual begins with a journey by the “Bemanti” (people of the water) to the Indian Ocean to collect water and on their return to the royal kraal, the little Ncwala begins, preceding the full moon. Youths then travel to collect the sacred branches of the “lusekwane”shrub, a species of acacia. On the third day a bull is ritually slaughtered, instilling solidarity and a spirit of valor among the young men.

The fourth day is the finale of the Ncwala when the King, in full ceremonial dress, joins his warriors in the traditional dance. He then enters a special hut and after further rituals, eats the first fruits of the season. On the appearance of the King to his people, they may also eat these fruits with the blessing of the ancestors. The burning of the King’s bedding and household items follows, thus cleansing everything in readiness for the New Year.

There are a lot of Nature Reserves throughout Swaziland , which protect a variety of animals, birds and flora throughout the kingdom. The “big five” can all be viewed at reserves within this vibrant country, Swaziland is home to almost all the wild species of Africa. Like South Africa our flora and fauna is in rich supply and is sure to delight the bird watchers and plant fanatics.

There are many tours which can be taken in Swaziland which can be carried out on anything from 4×4 to horseback.

Although there is no coastline in Swaziland there are many of Africa ’s varied terrains found here. From majestic mountain passes with rivers, waterfalls and gorges; historic rock formations which are among some of the oldest on the planet; fertile farmed valleys and the more typical African bush.

Handcraft items are made by the locals who make a living selling to the tourist’s. Select from creative basket ware in lovely colors, wood and stone carvings, glassware, exquisite candles, batik items, jewellery and much more. There are many types of accommodation available in Swaziland from bush camps, camping grounds, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, backpackers as well as up market hotels, for those who ant a bit of luxury.

In 1968 Swaziland was granted independence and was separated into the four regions of Hhohho, Manzini, Lubombo and Shiseiweni. These regions are distinct from the four geographical zones based on altitude and vegetation, which run from north to south and vary in altitude from 400 to 1800 meters above sea level. These are the mountainous Highveld to the west with a temperate climate; the subtropical Middleveld at a lower level and the Lowveld to the east, which is also subtropical. The furthest eastern zone runs along the Lubombo Mountains , which form a border with Mozambique .

Hohhho and Shiselweni are named after old royal homesteads in these areas, Manzini is the name of Swaziland ’s largest town, while Lubombo is named after the flat-topped range of mountains that run from north to south on the kingdom’s eastern border.

The boundaries were calculated so that each region would have at least one sizeable town to serve as an administrative centre of the specific area, thus Hhohho, Manzini, Lubombo and Shiselweni are respectively served by their administrative capitals of Mbabane, Manzini, Siteki and Hlathikhulu.

Airfare is one of the main considerations when one is planning a holiday at a distant destination. Most people would do a great deal of research on airfares before actually booking their flight. And yes, these are the people who generally get the best deals on airfares. However, technology has now made it possible for anyone to quickly search for airfares. All major airlines have websites through which they take flight bookings. Even the travel agents allow booking flights through their websites. Today, auctions are held for air tickets on many websites and travelers do find bargains at such auctions. All the traditional ways of booking websites seem to become passé.

The methodologies for searching for airfares on the internet are undergoing a constant improvement. One big improvement is in terms of availability of multiple-site airfare comparison search engines. Let’s have a look at the various advantages that Multiple-site airfare comparison search engines offer:

1. Time Saving Tool: Multiple-site airfare comparison search engines can easily be called as time saving tools for people who are looking to get the cheapest and the best airfares for their travel. Instead of going to each and every website separately, you can search for airfares on a number of websites in one go and hence save a lot of time.

2. Quality Research: Multiple-site airfare comparison search engines, inherently, provide good quality research because they cover a large number of websites. This includes the websites of airlines and travel agents too. So, what you get is the complete set of results that is compiled from various sources. The quality of your airfare research is further enhanced by the fact that the multi-site search engines generally include best airfares from the reputed websites only (not just any and every website). If you were doing this research yourself, you might miss out on some of these sources (websites) and who knows, the best airfare deal might actually be from one of such sources. Moreover, if you yourself were doing the research on various websites, you might not be able to make out if a particular website is a reputed one and end up falling into the trap of one of the fraudulent websites.

3. Easy Comparison: The airfare search results displayed by the multi-site airfare comparison search engines are automatically sorted by price or one of the other factors (e.g. airline etc). This makes it very easy to compare airfares from various websites/ sources and make a quick choice. This pre-empts the need for using spreadsheets or just keeping several browser windows open for the purpose of comparison.

4. Money Saving Tool: By using a multi site airfare comparison search engine, you can easily save some money on air travel. You can get the details about the cheapest flights in just a few seconds. Sometimes the savings are so significant that you can cover the cost of hotel accommodation through it. Thus multi site search engines can act as important money saving tools.

5. Complete Travel Package Offers: You can use most multi site airfare comparison search engines for booking complete travel packages too i.e. booking your flight, hotel and rental car in a single shot. For complete package offers you just have to additionally select the options ‘hotel’ and ‘car’; and the airfare comparison search engines will list the complete travel package deals. Besides being a time saving option, this can also help you save money since travel packages are generally cheaper than the individual bookings.

So, multi site airfare comparison engines seem to have all that a typical traveler would want from an airfare comparison website. Multi-site search engines are surely the way to go.
