The West Coast region of the Western Cape is still one of the most unspoilt. A couple of hours drive out of Cape Town, you will find this area hard to beat for sheer peace and quiet.

It is famous for its spring flower displays, bringing people from all over the world to see it’s magnificence during late August, September and early October. Carpets of daisies and brightly coloured bulbs erupt to create brilliance hard to match with words – superlatives don’t do justice to this magnificent spectacle.

The land could be seen as rather austere and not much appreciated outside of the flower season, but the desert and semi-desert areas do have their own appeal of wide open sky, distant hills and multi-coloured rocks.

Of course, there is much more to this region than just the flower season. Dropping down off the main N7 road, down to the coast, you come to St Helena Bay.

Slightly warmer water than Cape Town will greet your toes as you wander along white sand beaches, virtually on your own with the seals, cormorants and seagulls for company. The Southern Wright Whales are also visible on their migration during the months of July, August and September.

Stay at the St Helena Bay Hotel, or choose one of the smaller guest houses. The hotel is a friendly place with glorious views from its front bedrooms out over the water, although not The Ritz, it’s friendly, clean and serviceable.

Even in late December it’s possible to just alight on accommodation, but don’t count on this to happen for much longer, as this little known area will surely be discovered before too long. Expansion in the area is already underway with a considerable number of new homes being built at Shelley Point and Admirals Island, many of which will be second homes or holiday homes. Lifestyle is high on the list with golf courses, boating, spectacular views, wildlife and long sandy beaches drawing people to this part of the world.

Take a short trip along one of the dirt roads, through the farmland down to Paternoster, where you will believe you’ve ended up in Greece. Wonderful houses, whitewashed with green roofs giving out onto a long sandy beach.

Brightly coloured fishing boats trailing their nets metres from the beach with the fishermen hauling their catch straight onto the sand for everyone to view, squabble and purchase the fruits of their labour. Behind you, you’ll see fish hanging, drying in the open air.

From St Helena head towards Velddrif, a quaint fishing village situated at the mouth of the Berg River where it flows in St Helena Bay. Here is a paradise of fishing, birdlife and boating. Life drifts on in a peaceful atmosphere, giving you time to unwind and relax far from the madding crowd, noise and traffic and to surround yourself with the wonders of nature.

Don’t forget to take your binoculars and view the stunning flock of flamingos on the salt pans – they love the mineral rich waters of the Berg river, sifting the water through their bills to trap the algae in the water. The algae give the flamingos their stunning colour.

For the wine lovers amongst you, don’t forget to visit the fledgling wine growing area around Piketburg, about one hours drive inland. Two particular estates merit mention.

Nieuwedrift rates highly for the wonderfully warm welcome Johan Mostert gives all his visitors, firstly showing them his talented artist wife’s paintings lovingly displayed in his newly built tasting room before reverently opening his extremely select wines. Johan produces two wines, a Shiraz and a Chenin Blanc, but don’t for one minute compare them to any other wines of the same grape varietal – you have to taste them for yourselves!

Perched majestically on top of the hill overlooking the surrounding wheat fields is Org de Rac. This stunning brand new building houses a beautiful tasting room, a knowledgeable and friendly staff and a very interesting range of organic wines, which are all certified by the Soil Association. No sulphur additives make this wine quite delectable and must be tasted to be appreciated.

The West Coast offers visitors a rare chance to step off life’s merry-go-round and take life at an easier pace. It will seduce you with its light, colour and warmth and draw you back for years to come.

Many people hesitate to plan a ski vacation, as they do not know how to ski. To them, it is simply out of the question. Little do they know that a big part of most ski packages at ski resorts is to invite and welcome beginner skiers.

If the family decides they want to do something different on their vacation, go ahead and book a ski resort! At the end of the vacation, everyone will be a more experienced skier by having learned how to ski, and had a great time doing it.

When the ski resort is booked, make sure that beginning ski lessons and package deals are available in both private and group sessions. Instructors from ski clubs will be available, with lifts taking the whole family to the top – slow and easy. Lessons and ski knowledge will be something waiting for your first day on the slope, and you can literally be skiing down a mountain after an hour of instruction.

Try to choose a ski resort that has beginning skiing with trainers from a ski club or school; this would be the best choice. Learning to ski is really quite easy, but it helps to have highly qualified teachers. Also, if there is a local ski club or school, it would be better to learn from there first – to go back repeatedly, other than just one week-end. Most resorts actually have a ski school on the premises, and lessons are reasonably priced in group and private lessons, but not all.

Some ski resorts cater to more advanced skiers, so try to make sure the ski resort is the one needed. It is a good idea, however, to schedule a training appointment before you arrive at the resort. This will ensure that you can start learning to ski the very first hour of your vacation.

When the first lessons begin, most ski instructors start by showing the new skier how to maneuver around with their equipment. When wearing ski boots, their body position will be inclined slightly forward – there is a reason for this. When a skier is skiing down a mountain, they will be inclined forward. Walking in ski boots the first time is a bit difficult – but it works just fine if learned to walk with the knees slightly bent.

Several maneuvers will need to be learned, with the first maneuver being called the plow, or snow-plow. This is a technique that is done by literally using your skis as a snow plow. You make the back of the skis slowly move outwards, away from the body by applying pressure – and this will then stop a person. You guide yourself on skies by bending your knees and leaning in one direction or another, depending on which way you want to go. All of these techniques can be learned in one hour, even if a person has never been on a pair of skis in their life.

The beauty of skiing is that after you have learned how to snow plow, and have learned how to guide on the skis, a person is ready to ski! Get on the lift, head up the mountain for a beginner’s trail, and give it a try. Control your speed by snow plowing , while going very slowly at first. When you want to pick up some speed, draw your skis back in, in order to pick up a little more speed, then push them back out into the plow position to control that speed. As a beginner, you should stick to the trails that are designed for beginners. At most resorts, these trails are marked with a green emblem.

Blue trails are for intermediate skiers, and after one day of skiing the beginner trails, you may be ready for those trails. The black trails are for experts. These trails can be dangerous for people who do not have the skill level to handle them, so try to avoid black trails until you have had a great deal of ski instruction and experience. You will know when you are ready, by how you feel and the opinion of the instructors.

Beautiful Mexico City

Mexico City is the cultural epicenter of the country of Mexico. A visit to the Palacio Nacional opens your eyes to beautiful patios and halls decorated with murals, which portray Mexican history and culture. Known colloquially as D.F., the City of Mexico abounds in fascinating sites worth a look dating from yesteryears to the more modern and cosmopolitan.

A tour of Mexico City is enchanting for the simple reason that it has almost everything a visitor could aspire to experience. A lively culture, exquisite cuisine, world famous art, mariachi, traditional handicrafts, architecture and the omnipresent fiesta are the range of attractions that the city holds forth for the tourists. In addition, you can tire yourself shopping, trekking, visiting interesting museums, or entertaining yourself at theatres.

The Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Woods) and its surrounding green space is an interesting place to begin to get the feel of Mexico City. There are many museums to be found here, notable among them being the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Rufino Tamayo Museum, Museo de Arte Moderno and Papalote Nacional de Historia. However, the main attraction in the park, which will catch your eyes, is the Castillo de Chapultepec. Not very far is the La Feria, the city’s oldest amusement park. Here, nestled among the woods, you can catch a glimpse of Los Pinos, the official residence of the President. You can also make a tour of the Auditorio Nacional, the auditorium where world famous performances are staged.

Enjoy all this and more while basking under the hospitality of Mexico City hotels where excellent services and facilities are assured to keep the guests happy and satisfied.

“Do you know about Wal-Mart camping?” We didn’t know, but the old man at the campground in Florida insisted WalMart not only allowed RVs and vans to park overnight, but encouraged it. “Free camping,” he told us, and we didn’t wait long to take advantage of this new knowledge.

Somewhere in northern Georgia we pulled into a Wal-Mart, and sure enough, we saw some RVs off to one side of the parking lot, looking like they were there for the night. We were heading back to Michigan in our conversion van, and free camping sounded good to us. We parked, plugged in our 5-inch T.V., and settled in for the night. Nobody bothered us. In the morning we used the bathrooms inside, and bought some orange juice.

The next night we camped for free again, this time at a “Flying J” truckstop. There were RVs camping there as well. You’ll find Flying J Truckstops all over, and they actively court the RV crowd, counting on gas and other sales. We filled our tank there in the morning, and bought some food as well. As long as campers stay out of the way of the truckers, free camping is likely to continue.

Other Free Camping Places

Generally, you can camp free on any BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, unless it’s specifically forbidden in an area. This is also true of National Forest lands. In both cases you’re limited to a stay of two weeks in one place, though this rule is not always enforced, and the next two-week place might have to be only a hundred yards away. State forest lands are usually open to free camping without permits, but policies vary by state (The two-week rule seems to be common).

We camped in our van for ten days at Williams Landing, east of Tallahassee, Florida, on Lake Talquin. It’s a beautiful place, with hot showers. Our cost? Zero, and you can stay up to two weeks. There are free campgrounds scattered around the country. Ask an RVer about this, or buy a Woodall’s directory from any large RV dealer.

Note: Wal-mart seems to encourage the campers, except in coastal areas where too many RVer’s want to live in a parking lot. Don’t roll out the carpet and put out lawn furniture like one traveler we heard about, or you may ruin it for all. Some stay for a week at a time, going out all day to see the sights (and so they don’t wear out their welcome). Wal-mart gets business from the campers, but they’ll only continue their policy if they don’t have problems, so keep it low-key.

To find a Wal-Mart in the area you’re traveling to, visit Walmart.com. Scroll down to the “store finder” link to search. Thank you for camping at Wal-Mart!

Alaska Cruise Lines

Among the famous cruise lines offering services in Alaskan seas are the Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Radisson, Norwegian, Holland America, and American Safari. Each cruise line has its own ships and itineraries, and is most active in the peak season between May and September.

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Liner is one of the most famous Alaskan cruise liners. Its main ship is the Radiance of the Seas, with sister ships Serenade of the Seas and Vision of the Seas. Royal Caribbean provides an eight-day, seven-night Alaskan cruise. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line specializes in cruising along frontier towns, and glacier cruising.

The Princess Cruise Line is highly recommended by cruise critics. Its huge ships are often called floating cities due to the vast number of restaurants, Broadway theatres, casinos, health spas, movie halls, lounges, discotheques and other forms of relaxation present onboard. Their popular ships are the Diamond Princess, Sapphire Princess, Coral Princess, and Island Princess. They have weeklong itineraries, and people can book them either during their northward or southward voyages.

The Celebrity Cruise Line is known for its fleet of large opulent ships like Zenith, Mercury, Infinity, Constellation, Summit, and Millennium. Celebrity has recently launched ships in the Xpedition class, which are made for adventure cruises.

Besides the huge cruise lines, small ships are also very popular. Small ships have better navigation ability and hence are favorites among adventure seekers. Lindblad specializes in its small cruise ships that can hold up to 120 guests. Holland America has five ships, namely Statendam, Veendam, Ryndam, Zaandam, and Volendam, which offer small cruises on the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay.

American Safari provides long as well as short Alaskan cruises in yachts. Their yacht Safari Quest has both five day-four night as well as eight day-seven night cruises. Safari Spirit and Safari Escape also conduct fortnightly cruises to Alaska. Most cruises conducted by American Safari are chartered, and the charter rates for the Safari Quest are about $58,000 for five days.

For an extended vacation away from home and work, nothing beats renting a cottage or house at your destination. Especially if you have children, a summer or winter rental provides the space you need to be comfortable, and often vacation rentals are more reasonably priced than hotels for extended visits of a week or more.

Often when you arrange to rent a vacation home, you will find the major necessities are there at your disposal: a working kitchen, TV, easy access to the beach or mountains (or wherever you happen to be), and utensils. However, if you want to make your vacation more homelike, you may consider a few necessities to ensure that your vacation is fun and safe for everybody.

Here are just a few suggested items to pack for your vacation rental:

Linens and Sheets – While many vacation rentals provide sheets and towels, some people find that bringing a bit of home enhances the vacation and nighttime comfort. To sleep on familiar sheets, even in a strange bed, may ease any worries of leaving the house for a long period of time. Children, too, may feel better to have familiar surroundings, so make sure to bring along a favored blanket or stuffed toy.

Rain and Weather Gear – Regardless of what time of year you travel, weather will be unpredictable. It is always a good idea to bring along a sweater, jacket, or raincoat just in case. If you are taking a winter holiday, be sure to pack for the weather and any spontaneous snow storms.

Safety Equipment – In the event of a power outage, it’s always a good idea to keep matches, flashlights, and candles handy. Not every vacation rental may provide these, so pack some for the trip. A first aid kit is also a must.

Groceries and Water – Especially if you are not certain of your location, bring some groceries for the first few days as you get situated. Canned goods, dry pasta, and drink mixes are good to keep around for quick meals.

Laundry Soap – If you are staying for a while, you will need to do laundry. Bringing your home brand of laundry soap will lend a comfortable feeling to your vacation, especially if the rental doesn’t provide any.

Small, personal touches from home and staples for meals and safety will help your stay in a vacation rental fun, safe, and memorable for the whole family.

The Costa Brava Insight

Starting at Blanes to the south and ending at Cadaques in the North, the Costa Brava offers purchasers natural beauty, proximity to the great city of Barcelona, historic medieval villages, world-famous restaurants like “El Bulli” at Roses, innumberable excellent sporting opportunities including world famous golf courses and ski-ing in the Pyrenees.

Girona/Costa Brava airport now has four flights a day from London Stansted. There are innumerable fights from almost everywhere in the UK to Barcelona, and local train services are excellent, as is the road network. English is widely spoken, but it is a big asset if you speak a little Spanish. No-one expects you to speak the local language – Catalan.

Although cooler in winter than the Costa del Sol further south, it is also cooler in summer with daytime temperatures around 30c. Lunch on the terrace is a year round option except perhaps in December and January. The atmosphere is also very different, more sophisticated. Incomers are of many nationalities, usually retired or soon-to-retire professionals. Generally they are well travelled, fairly well-off, and sociable, but there are no foreign “ghettos” as occurs further south, so no English restaurants, pubs and bars. Eating out locally is however an inexpensive, and therefore frequent, pleasure.

This is not a travel guide. Our aim in telling you about the main towns and resorts of the Costa Brava, is to try to give you a feel for what would be the right area for you. When making a buying decision, do make sure that you are clear about what you want. Some parts of the Costa Brava die out of season. That may not matter if you don’t plan on being here out of season, but can be soul-destroying otherwise.

Exotic Vacation

Sometimes, it’s not a whole lot of fun being a grown up. It seems like there’s an endless cycle of stress, responsibility and dare I say it, boredom, about life for many adults. Whatever happened to those golden days of youth, when every day seemed like an adventure, with new horizons to explore? Well, life doesn’t have to be like being a mouse on an exercise wheel – if you take action now and book an exotic vacation. There’s no point endlessly waiting for things to change; you need to book the tickets and get ready to go.

Find Your Ideal Exotic Vacation

Finding ideas for where to go on your exotic vacation has become much simpler with the arrival of the Internet. All you have to do is surf on the web for an hour or two, and you’re sure to come across a bunch of exotic places you want to visit. If you’ve arrived at a travel site and see “Mauritius” listed as a destination? Click on it, and find out more.

Another great source of inspiration is your local travel agent’s office. They usually have a rack of glossy color brochures for people to browse through, so you can simply go in and have look. Check out the photos on the brochure covers until you see something that looks interesting, and then find out more. You can also try looking at the ads in your favorite magazines. Or perhaps buy or borrow a travel magazine, to see what exotic vacations they highlight.

Your major daily newspaper will usually have a travel supplement once a week, so grab a copy and take a look. With 52 major stories needed every year, it’s safe to say that at some point they will start to write about places that aren’t on everybody’s travel itinerary. So you can pick up ideas for an exotic vacation there. They also run lots of travel related ads, which can be useful both for getting destination ideas, and for finding companies that run tours to a place you want to go.

Picking the Best Deal

An exotic vacation can be anything you want it to be, which is what makes it so exciting. Nowadays there are so many options available, it’s easy to find an exciting place to visit. Want to check out Transylvania on Halloween? There’s sure to be a tour company that will take you there. Perhaps you’d rather just sit back and relax on a luxury cruise ship, with the occasional stop in port to check out another exotic place. Although you can choose to organize everything yourself as you go, sometimes it can be easier to book everything in advance, or travel with a tour company. That way you can focus on enjoying your vacation, rather than getting bogged down in the details of where you’re going to stay the next night. You can often get better prices by bundling a number of things together, such as flights, car rental and accommodation.

Enjoying Your Exotic Vacation

Once you get started on planning your exotic vacation, you’ll discover it’s almost as much fun planning the vacation as it is to actually go! So don’t put it off any longer; have a look around, find an exotic destination, and book your vacation now!

Multi-Cultural Hungary

One will generally feel that Hungary comes across as having a complex sense of identity. It regards itself not as Balkan or Slavic, but Western. History, as well reveals that the country is an assortment of cultures which can be a major area of attraction for tourism to the country. The mosaic of cultures and lineages that Hungary possesses can be understood by the fact that it shares shared borders with the Slovak Republic, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Austria and Slovenia. The beautiful stretches of water such as Lake Balaton can be a tourist’s delight especially because they pulsate with hot, medicinal springs.

In spite of the complex sense of identity, what is worth acknowledging is that Hungary has nevertheless retained its unique language and customs. As a tourist what will strike you is the immense pride that the Hungarians have for their homeland. They will not hesitate to convince a tourist to spend time to explore Hungary’s thousands of acres of vineyards and orchards as well as 11 national parks and hundreds of protected areas. Hungary will attract you with its rich tradition of folk and classical music. Budapest, the capital city has for long been associated with writers, artists and musicians. It also has attractions for the young modern crowd. Modern music can be heard to spill out from nightclubs, trendy bars and discos. Hungary tourism has a culture of excellent hospitality which is exemplified by the hotels Hungary has to offer to the visitors.
