3. If you want to experience both land and sea, then don’t overlook Montana de Oro State Park in California. You can camp on the beach and hike along bluffs that overlook colonies of sea lions. No fires are allowed so be sure to pack your grill and plenty of water. This is camping for those who are truly ready to get away from modern life.

4. Ready to leave the mainland for a while? Then catch a ferry out to Angel Island State Park off of San Francisco Bay. There are only nine sites available, so reserve in advance. While there, you can hike to the islands various tourist shops and darling cafes. If you forgot your hiking boots, rent a bike and explore the island’s trails.

5. Those who want three vacations in one should reserve at Fort Welikit Family Campground, located in South Dakota. Medicine Bow is a tiny, rural, community in southeastern Wyoming. The official population is less than 300 people. It is located along a short section of Highway 30, that separates from Interstate 80, at what is referred to as Walcott Junction, and rejoining the Interstate at the town of Laramie. That section of the Highway is a common alternate route during snow storms, and periods of high winds, when light trailers are not allowed on the Interstate. Medicine Bow is at the junction of Highway 30 and State Highway 487, which goes north, through the Shirley Basin, to Casper.

Despite its small size, Medicine Bow is a “Mecca” for two different types of sports shooting. Being out in the middle of alpine prairies, Medicine Bow is in prime habitat for antelope and prairie dogs. The Spring brings out the sport and distance shooters for prairie dog season. August brings bow season for all species of “big game” animals (including pronghorn antelope). Mid-September begins rifle season for antelope. Most all of Wyoming is known throughout hunting and wildlife observation circles as having more “trophy class” buck antelope than any other state in the Union.

While staying in Medicine Bow, hunters are able to fan out in all directions in order to fill their tags. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest is a short drive from the town, for hunting in wooded areas. Mule deer, elk, and moose are all found there. The Shirley Basin is also a noted stop for hunters of not only antelope, but mule deer, as well. There are open, State, and Federal, lands available to hunt on, but there is also lots of outfitted ranch lands available, as well. Some ranchers are willing to allow shooters on their property to “rid” them of prairie dogs, but some charge fees, and others only allow guided, outfitted hunts. You will need to contact the ranchers to find out which group they are in.

Medicine Bow is the town that is featured in Owen Wister’s “historical” novel, “The Virginian”. It is from that novel that we get the “classic” old western line, “when you call me that, smile”. As a matter of fact, the main hotel in town is called the Virginian, and maintains an “old west” atmosphere. There are rooms that share a common bathroom, as in the older style, but you may also rent rooms with their own facilities. You may rent a completely modern room, as well. There is also the Trampas Lodge, which is a modern, single story, motel. (The name Trampas comes from the character in the novel who initiated the argument that spawned the famous comment.) If you would like to stay in Medicine Bow, it is usually not too much of a problem to find an available room. However, if you come for the hunting season (September through November), or are traveling through at that time, Medicine Bow has been known to triple its population during those months, so it is wise to make reservations well in advance of your arrival.

And bars, clubs and beaches there are. Much the same as you’ll find in Ibiza, Thailand, and Cancun. And that’s fine, if all you’re after is bubbly happiness in a cocktail glass and nice tan (and the beginnings of a sexy and malignant melanoma).

But this tends to mean you’ll be overlooking the fact that the island itself has one of the most fascinating histories around. Almost every empire on the face of this earth invaded here. The Ottomans, the Lusignans, the Byzantines, the Venetians. Even the Arabs conducted a few casual raids, possibly just to keep up appearances. All left their mark on the culture and history of this remarkable island. Add to this potent mix a healthy foundation of Ancient Greek and Roman influences in an island washed by inky blue waves and warmed by a Mediterranean sun, and you’ve got a holiday worth a thousand brandy sours and ouzos.

Paphos, more than just a nightclub

One of the cities of Cyprus, which provides an excellent base to immerse you in the history and culture, is Paphos, situated on the West Coast.If you just want to have a roam around Paphos itself, you’ve got loads of history to wander about in.

To the north is a little village by the name of Kathikas – it’s a great destination if you like to indulge amongst the vineyards. To the east of Kathikas is an even tinier wine-growing village – Arodes – with a population numbering in the tens. Nearby gorges provide dramatic scenery should you wish for inspiration or a Kodak moment.

Close by Arodes is the Akamas Peninsula, where you’ll find the most romantic sounding spot in the entire universe – the Baths of Aphrodite. And worthy of such a name it is, being bloody beautiful. And if, after your own holy soak, you make your little legs walk a couple of kilometres, you’ll find yourself at the Fontana Amorosa or “the Fountains of Luuurve”. Tis a sexy spot indeed.

Closer to home, or Paphos, you’ve got the brilliant Ayios Neophytos Monastery – carved out of the mountain by a hermit. Bless those hermits, they really do have a lot of spare time. The monastery houses some of the best Byzantine frescoes around.

And just because Aphrodite was a popular girl around here, you’ve got the ruins of the famous Temple of Aphrodite about 14 kilometres east of Paphos. It once was a popular pilgrimage for believers, back when people were still convinced the Gods could very well turn up any second in the form of a bull, or a heavy old person.

This is really only the start, and whether you’ve got a few days, or a few weeks, Paphos and the surrounding areas will keep you knee-deep in Gods, mosaics, tavernas, ruins, vineyards, beaches, mountains and donkeys. Keep an ear out for Pan’s pipes.

Bargaining for goods and services is customary in Egypt and many visitors relish negotiating for that elusive ‘best’ price. But for those unused to the concept, haggling can seem daunting. Securing the ‘right’ price, even for Egyptians, is an acquired skill that takes practice, patience and above all a sense of humour.

When hunting for gifts and souvenirs visitors should never feel pressurised to purchase quickly. Competition is stiff between traders and most shops and markets are open until midnight, seven days a week, affording the visitor plenty of time to browse the wealth of exotic goods available and compare prices.

But there are exceptions to this. Charges are not open to negotiation in coffee shops, restaurants and at fruit and vegetable stalls where profit margins are low. Goods in supermarkets and pharmacies are mostly computerised and prices there are fixed. Private taxi fares should be agreed before acceptance and getting an idea of the real cost of public transport is to be recommended before using.

The local bazaar (souq), where haggling is practically obligatory, can be especially intimidating for the novice shopper on a first visit. Having a drink at any one of the numerous coffee shops is a good way of adjusting to the cacophony of noise and overpowering aromas from spices and smoke. Vendors work extremely hard at enticing potential buyers to inspect their wares. Careful scrutiny of the pantomime of negotiations that follow a successful engagement is the best introduction to the art of Egyptian street trading.

Shopkeepers are more than happy to discuss prices, but most are reluctant to put a value on any item until they have an idea of how much money is likely to be spent. For the serious bargain hunter patience and use of some acting skills is vital. Hesitating, pretending lack of funds and walking away all help.

No trader worth his salt willingly lets a potential buyer go and will eventually name a figure. When he does, a counter offer of at least half is acceptable and from thereon a right good ‘haggling banter’ can be enjoyed by all.

Should a vendor stick at a price that seems too high then either remain persistent, and perhaps casually mention that you have seen the item cheaper elsewhere, or politely depart. A vendor will only let you go if your final offer really is too low.

One useful ploy is to discuss the price of an unwanted item and, when negotiations reach a stalemate, enquire about the item you really want. The vendor, anxious to make a sale, will almost certainly give you his lowest acceptable price for this one.

It can be difficult to prevent others joining in the bidding game, but try not to as it only causes confusion and generally works against you.

Window shopping alone is great fun and a valuable opportunity for tourists to learn about the local people, culture as well as checking out prices. No one is ever obliged to make a purchase, even when offered refreshments.

Should you subsequently find out that someone paid less for the same purchase, don’t worry about it if you think what you paid was fair, reasonable and affordable.

For many tourists the powerful purchasing power of the euro and dollar, combined with relatively cheaper prices for goods and services, is a major reason for choosing Egypt as a holiday destination. But it should be borne in mind, however, that wages are extremely low and for most traders profits are marginal as well as seasonal.

Visitors can generally afford to be a little generous and expect to pay slightly over the odds, especially when asking prices are put into perspective when converted.

However, some unfortunate visitors have been known to forget and squander precious holiday time arguing like crazy over what turned out to be mere pennies in their own currency!

For better or worse, man has tamed Mother Nature in many countries. My general impression is this isn’t the case in Costa Rica.

San Jose to Carrillo

Roughly ten of us had decided to head to Costa Rica for a week to stay at a friend’s place just outside the beach town of Carrillo on the west coast. We flew into San Jose and were supposed to be met by a rental company representative that had two new VW vans for us.

As often happens in such situations, we weren’t met by anyone much less a person with vans. Calls were made but not answered. Lunch was had. Calls were made again and finally answered. After a bit of “intense” conversation, we were told the vans would be at the airport in 15 minutes. Roughly two hours later, two VW vans apparently stolen from Woodstock rolled into parking lot. The trip had certainly started on a sour note, but we decided to cut our losses and take the vans.

As we rolled out of San Jose, it was starting to get dark. Unaware that a new highway had been opened, we followed the old route which wound through the mountains and added two hours to the trip. Two hours that would haunt us for days.

As the hours passed, we laughed away the time reliving the past. I was sitting in the back of the van with Stuart, a nurse in San Diego, and Picasso, a graphic designer for surf clothing companies. We were all in shorts and flip flops, which was appropriate for the heat and humidity. How I wished I had worn pants and boots.

As we drove along, we happened to come upon a little village. Little cafes and stores passed us as we drove down the road. So did street lights. Bright street lights. Street lights that lit up the inside of the van.

And the things in it.

Cockroaches. Big cockroaches. They were climbing on the walls of the van and across the floors. A few even took off and flew from one wall to the other.

This is the part in the movie where the men, Picasso and I, take action to protect our female companion, Stuart. Of course, who believes what they see in the movies? In our case, Picasso screamed like a little girl and started stomping on the floor and kicking the walls. I, in turn, did the ultimate crunch, which is to say I whipped my legs off the ground with such speed as to make a drill sergeant weep with joy. I then jumped off the bench just to make sure there weren’t any of the little buggers in my shorts. Stuart, on the other hand, just laughed at us.

Our driver whipped over to the side of the road to find out what the heck was going on. The other van pulled over as well and discovered they had a cockroach problem as well. We were apparently driving the hive around the country.

After obtaining a little liquid courage at one of the cafes in the village, we came up with a solution for keeping the creepy crawlies at bay. More liquid courage, drivers excepted. Much more.

New bravery in hand, we reclaimed the vans and hauled it to Carrillo as fast as possible. Picasso danced the cockroach crunch throughout the remainder of the trip, which made for a messy van and the need for new flip flops. I hoped I was imagining things crawling on my legs. Stuart just kept laughing.

Nature is beautiful, except when it ain’t!
