San Francisco Quick Guide

San Francisco is the USA spirit as much as it is the opposite = people who love the USA as a tourist destination will love San Francisco, people who dislike the USA as a tourist destination will, yes you guessed right, love San Francisco just the same and this is because San Francisco is surely a unique place because it has it all, in terms of culture, fun, highrise buildings and small traditional houses, squares and avenues, hills and sea, yuppies and hippies, modern and old etc…

In two words San Francisco IS one big meltin’ pot of everything you would want from an international city and looks as much american as it does look european, but it does as well look very chinese, or thai, or well.. much more. The nice feel of San Francisco is the kind of feel of a place where everyone is welcome and things works just fine in any condition and in any manner: chic and stylish as well as alternative and anticonventional and you can experience it all in one go, what a deal!

From Beat Generation, Critical Mass, Gay Pride and North Beach to ’super-technology-chic’, fashion, design as well as tradition. The city itself in its structure resemble this ‘mixed’ attitude and it is a mosaic of different tastes composed of Chinatown, Mission, Castro, SoMa, Haight-Ashbury, North Beach and much more to explore. With its 751.000 inhabitants is smaller than you might think, but surely looks bigger and has nothing less than New York City in terms of entertainment, things to see and do, latest trends, etc… It is in many ways the very soul of Californian style and its ‘plot’. It is somehow like reading a huge book from the index and we think you could easily think of it as a start and an end as well of the ‘big book of California’. Downtown streets rise on impossible gradients to reveal stunning views of the city, the bay and beyond and a taxi run is an experience itself.

San Francisco has for sure something magic and that is pretty clear as soon as you see the fog envelope the city in magical mist and the clouds embracing the Golden Gate. not to forget the incredible sea and all that it has to offer to visitors and locals and you should not miss a visit to Fisherman’s Wharf and the Marina. San Francisco is not generally considered to be cheap but yes you can find loads of offers in terms of hotels (including luxury discounted ones) and restaurants. It is suggested to book in advance since you can find real good hotel deals in hip hotels if you do so. Apart of lodging, in terms of well… food, there many many options that won’t kill your credit card and if you want to eat cheap we suggest you try some thai restaurants and of course chinese restaurants. Compared to many other US cities that require quite a big load of cash to enjoy, San Francisco often offer free live music and events and for $30 you can get a good night out (and remember to bring your id with you, because yes you’ll get ‘carded in many nightclubs, etc…).

If you’re up for a show check out the free weekly Bay Guardian, as well as the Sunday Chronicle ‘Pink Pages’ supplement. Of course if you’re up for a major event and/or you wish to experience something out of the ordinary we suggest you -again- book in advance. Bars: you mention it you have it, lots of bars, from trendy, to alternative, from family friendly to wild. In terms of classical music and opera San Francisco has not got an incredible reputation but local symphony, opera and ballet companies are as far as we experienced really good.

For a good comedy night go for: Bay Area Theatresports Bayfront Theatre, Bldg B, Third floor, Fort Mason Center (Marina Blvd at Buchanan St) tel 415/474-6776. An acting-based improv group that can be hilariously spontaneous. The majority of theater in downtown San Francisco are reasonably inexpensive and worth attending. We do think that San Francisco it is one great city and we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did.

Do a beach, wine, and adventure in a cave catch your interest? So what are you waiting for? Plan and wear your traveling shoes now and get to St. Mary. You can be assured that the whole family will enjoy your vacation in this smallest parish among the twelve parishes of Jersey. St. Mary is located in the northwest of the Jersey Island and occupies a land area of 3,604 vergees. It is the parish that borders other four parishes in the Island.

The Le Creux du Vis or the Devil’s Hole is one of the natural attractions in St. Mary. This is a spot of cave and cliff path. This offers a lucrative tourist destination to view the satanic majesty of this cave. It is a natural cater that was formed with the waters of the bay. It measures 100ft across and 200 ft down to the ground. This will be a great experience for everyone. A picture with the Devil’s Hole in the background will be a picture perfect for a post card.

Also, you can relax and lure in the Greve de Lecq, a beach with wonderful golden sand. In here you will be able to watch with awe how fishermen bring their bountiful catch to the shore. Also, you can join the local islanders as they soak out in the sun with the wide stretches of sand. The beach has a lot of parking spaces so no need to worry about leaving your vehicles elsewhere. Even your kids will enjoy swimming in the beach since nothing is really safe in the waters of Greve de Lecq. And at the eastern end of the beach, you and your kids can also enjoy the stream that flows over the coarse sand. Food would not even be a problem since pubs and café lined the shoreline of the beach. If you decide to pay a visit to this place, also find a local who can lead you to way to the secret beach.

But do not think that locals of St. Mary only love the outdoors. They also love to preserve the aesthetic, natural and historic interest of Jersey. Should you want to trace the past history of the island until the present, visit the Elms. This was constructed in the 1740 and is now the National Trust for Jersey headquarters.

And lastly, a trip to St. Mary would never be complete without a trip to the La Mare Vineyards and Distillery. In here you will be able to appreciate winemaking. This attraction is not just for those adults that love premium quality wine, even kids will enjoy this place. The distillery has an adventure playground that would keep your kids play while you are enjoying the trip to the vineyards, gardens and orchards. You can also choose and buy the wine from them. They also have other special gift items.

Though it was regarded as the smallest parish in the Jersey Islands, the preserved friendly, family oriented and peaceful ambience of St. Mary will keep you coming back yearly.

Your well-deserved vacation is near and you are thinking about making reservations. You have two basic choices:

Do you book different components of your holiday such as airline, hotel, and car rental separately or do you book the components as a package, all in one booking?

Depending on whether you have the time and the patience, you could book separately, which sometimes can lead to some savings. However, if you prefer to have everything ready and included in one price, then the package alternative is for you.

Holiday packages can be cheaper than other alternatives because the company selling the products has already negotiated substantial discounts, some of which are passed down to you, the consumer. The principle of packaged holidays is that places and seats are reserved in huge numbers, thus making an individual package relatively cheap.

In a sense it is good to know that all the reservations have taken place. An added bonus can be traveling with other like-minded people possibly leading to friendship. Also in case any difficulties arise, there is often a company representative who will be able to help you.

It is worth bearing in mind, the apparent ease and convenience that packages bring can have downsides too. This is how lower prices are achieved:

1. Your plane may depart late at night. Be prepared for this and it won’t be too much of a disappointment. Alternatively if you have the choice to have a late night departure you should notice a lower price. If not, “ask” for the discount. You’ll be amazed how often you get discounts by simply asking.

2. The allocated seats on the aircraft are sometimes in the middle (away from windows). This may be important if you are traveling with children. Make sure you carry plenty of suitable entertainment. Note that the in-flight movie may not be interesting for the children.

3. If there are several members in your party, you may not all be able to sit together. Again this is even more important if you have children with you.

4. Your hotel room may not offer the best view possible, nor may it be the quietest. Can you handle this? Ask before you book, find out the situation and take alternative action if necessary.

5. Packages are geared to suit groups, as opposed to individuals. They are not always flexible. Flexibility costs extra, quite a bit extra.

6. Cancellations usually involve a penalty or at least an administration charge, which can be more than you expect. Always “ask” before booking.

7. Extras such as upgrades and add-ons can attract a substantial premium.

8. You are stuck with other travelers in the group, whether you like them or not. There is always at least one annoying person in the group but then there are usually a few very interesting and likeable people too.

8. Popular packages are usually fully booked early. You may have to settle for an alternative.

9. Your airline may take an indirect route and a stopover may be on the cards. The right holiday packages can be fun and the majority of people using them are pleasantly surprised. Don’t let the downsides to package holidays put you off.

Remember, there is no such thing as a ‘perfect set-up’. Provided you go into it with reasonable understanding and an open mind, you’re sure to have a great time.

Lauderdale Lakes might be described as a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale; it is located just to the northwest. It is notable in a few respects: To start, the very first Office Depot in the nation is located in Lauderdale Lakes, and is often frequented by office manager pilgrims. Secondly, it is notable for its interesting demographic history. It started out as a retirement spot for elderly northeasterners, but recently many West-Indians, particularly Jamaicans, have moved in (Lauderdale Lakes now has one of the highest concentrations of West Indians in Florida). This gives Lauderdale Lakes an interesting demographic mix, and a very unique cultural ambiance.

It may surprise you, therefore, that my featured attraction for Lauderdale Lakes has nothing to do with either the Northeast or the West Indies. Instead, I recommend a simple Chinese restaurant. This restaurant, however, is one of my favorites in the Fort Lauderdale area, both for its amazing food and its fantastic prices.

The Silver Pond Chinese Restaurant is the kind of place you can go for any occasion – it’s informal enough for casual meals, but the food is so good, you’ll want to go for special occasions too. The food is predominantly Cantonese, and though I generally prefer Szechwan or Hunan when I eat Chinese food, the Silver Pond crafts their dishes so skillfully that regional stylistic considerations no longer matter. Cantonese food is ideally known for delicate sauces and far lighter seasonings than Szechwan or Hunan. My picks for meals are as follows: for a first course, try the winter melon soup – chunks of winter melon mingle with loads of shrimp, pork, mushrooms, and crab meat in a chicken consommé base. Winter melon itself tastes a bit like potato, but has the look of a translucent cube. As seafood is a bit of a house specialty, I would recommend taking full advantage the Silver Pond’s fruits de mer. If you are so inclined, try the whole steamed sea bass, infused with ginger and scallions (one of the most expensive items on the menu, you pay market price for it). If seafood isn’t your thing, try their Peking Duck.

The Silver Pond is definitely Lauderdale Lakes’ best restaurant, and is perfect for any occasion, whether an impromptu drop in or a special event, complete with reservation and a limousine from Millenium Limo (a limo is always a good idea). Lauderdale Lakes awaits!
