Confederation Park is one of the main centres of Ottawa’s Winterlude Festival, and what was excellent for us was that we were staying right across the street at the Lord Elgin Hotel. So all we had to do was literally cross the street and we were right in the heart of the action.

Winterlude is Ottawa’s winter festival, organized by the National Capital Commission. It brings together exciting events and activities for the whole family and most of the activities are free of charge. Naturally, Winterlude is a big draw for tourists: last year the festival attractived approximately 650,000 visitors.

You would think that Ottawa is a city of bureaucrats, who maintain a stiff upper lip at all times. Far from it, as we had already seen during our Friday night outing to Fat Tuesdays in the ByWard Market, Ottawans know how to party and Winterlude is a 2 week long excuse for everyone to get out and celebrate winter.

Winterlude is hosted throughout the entire city, so here is a summary of some of the main Winterlude Locations:
Confederation Park is hosting the Casino du Lac-Leamy Crystal Garden, an outdoor entertainment venue that includes the Crystal Lounge, a variety of food vendors and outdoor sculptures.

When we headed out on Saturday morning, we walked right into the ice carving competition where 7 or 8 ice carvers were working on frozen blocks of ice, using a variety of electric and hand tools to give shape to the creatures of their imagination.
Chain saws were being used, electrical grinding tools and hand chisels slowly but surely created recognizeable objects. Teddy bears, choo-choo trains and cartoon characters were coming to life right in front of our very eyes.

Confederation Park also hosts the Fire and Ice Culinary Demonstrations, and renowned chefs and media personalities compete for the Winterlude Ice Chef titles.
Another Winterlude location just minutes away is the American Express Snowbowl, a stage located right in front of the Government Conference Centre. This year’s lineup includes Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, Mes Aïeux, Jully Black, Doba Caracol, Daniel Lanois and many more.

On our way back from Darcy McGee’s on Saturday evening we walked down to Confederation Park and on to the American Express Snowbowl and caught a bit of a live concert. The stage was set against the National Conference Centre and was beautifully illuminated in orange, pink and purple shades and the crowd was enjoying the live music.
The Rideau Canal Skateway is another official Winterlude location. This past weekend I had a chance to experience the Canal myself, and on a beautiful crisp winter day, it was an exhiliariting experience to glide almost weightlessly across the frozen expanse of the 7.8 km long Rideau Canal, indeed the world’s largest natural ice skating surface, according to the Guiness Book of World Records.

The Rideau Canal Skateway itself hosts a variety of activities: you can get a taste of Aboriginal culture, traditions and cuisine at the Pig Island Aboriginal Village. The Canadian Tire JumpStart Activity Centre at Fifth Avenue allows children to test their hockey skills and they can also try out the Jumpai trampoline system. Union Station at Rideau Street provides a 1920s ambience: the history of the railway yards on the banks of the Rideau River is recounted on displays and interpretive panels.
This past Saturday, the 26th Annual Bed Race on Dow’s Lake combined athleticism, ingenous engineering and fundraising for a great day of charity and hilarity.

Another opportunity for fundraising is coming up on February 19, 2006, when Canadian Tire invities you to participate in the Great Skate from 11 am to 3 pm on the Rideau Canal Skateway on Fifth Avenue. Proceeds will go to Canadian Tire JumpStart, a charitable program created by the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families that helps kids in financial need participate in organized sports and recreation.
On the other side of the Ottawa River in Hull, Quebec, is Jacques-Cartier Park, official location of Snowflake Kingdom and another official Winterlude site. It offers the Ice Hogs Winter Sports Adventure, individual slides of different slopes which will provide fun to the whole family.

Northern Place is a snow shelter and presents the enchanting world of Aboriginal cultures with aboriginal shows and traditional demonstrations. The Ice Hog Amphitheatre is home to the Ice Hog’s Walkabout, and in case you didn’t know, the Ice Hogs are Winterlude’s official mascots. Children can get a hug from one of their favourite mascots – Mama, Papa, Noumi and Nouma. The Snowflake Kingdom also presents “Expérience Maneige”, an opportunity for 5 to 8 year old children to go downhill skiing.
And a restaurant festival preceeds Winterlude. This year Taste of Winterlude was held from January 20 to February 2, 2006, where many popular restaurants in Ottawa-Gatineau served up their specialties in affordable prix-fix menu format. We missed the restaurant festival, but good food was not lacking during our past 2 days in Ottawa. Our enjoyable dinners at Fat Tuesdays and Darcy McGee’s gave us a sample of some of the culinary treats on offer in Ottawa.

Winterlude offers a wide variety of activities, and fortunately this past weekend we had a chance to participate in just a few. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope to come back to Ottawa for another festival, maybe even the famous Tulip Festival this coming May…….

Whether alone or with friends, backpacking can be a fun and adventurous way to spend a weekend. It gives you a chance to escape the madness of the city, explore a natural surrounding and get some great exercise to boot.

One should never go unprepared, however. Take it from me, not having the right gear or equipment can make a backpacking trip go from an exciting weekend to a frightening two day disaster with no end in sight. There’s nothing worse than being stuck on a mountain in a sudden and unexpected rainstorm, without the right water resistant protection. One of the most very important items a backpacker should bring to avoid such a watery suffering is a good backpacking tent.

Though important, backpacking tents are a tricky commodity it can be difficult to pin down exactly the kind you should get. If you are planning on going backing soon and are in the market for a tent, here are some simple tips that may give you a place to start.

First of all, the kind of environment you plan to be mountain climbing through is important to keep in mind as you choose your tent. Even if it is suspect to rain, it is a good idea to purchase a tent that is completely water resistant and closed
on all sides.

Even though a ‘lean to’ or cover like tent with open sides is an well organized and simple form of shelter, these kinds of tents can only protect from the mildest of weather conditions. Additionally, most wilderness areas popular for backpackings are safe places for insects, such as mosquitoes, and an open tent will offer no protection against these pests.

Secondly, you should consider the length of your trip when looking for a backpacking tent. Also, what kind of land are you going to pass through? Are you going for a rough and nearly vertical thirty mile plus climb, or a pleasant and easy five mile trip through the woods? If the latter is the case, weight is not an issue and you can purchase as large a tent as you please. The larger the better; you can house all your equipment inside to avoid damage from morning dew or from night animals with a sufficiently large tent. If you are taking a more arduous journey, you’ll want the lightest possible tent you can get that offers adequate protection.

Lastly, choose a good brand name. Ask for advice at the store you visit, or if you are ordering one online, choose a name that you are familiar with. Backpacking tents are important, and not an area to hold back on on financially speaking. If you are pressed for cash, bring cheaper food items. I’d rather eat freeze dried sauce while warm and dry in a nice, functional tent, than eat bone mignon while soaking wet in a heap of junk that fell apart as soon as it started really pouring.

Personally I prefer to sleep under the stars while backpacking, if the weather permits. A good insect disgusting can reduce the mosquito problem and there is something refreshing about waking up covered in dew. However, it only took one bad and very wet experience for me to learn that you should always bring a tent on a backpacking trip, whether or not you plan to use it.

No matter which cruise line you sail on, you can find a luxury cruise experience. Most cruise lines offer some luxuries for just about any budget, so you don’t necessarily have to spend millions of dollars or be rich to enjoy one. Of course, every cruise has various pricing packages and if you want a larger stateroom rather than a cabin, you’re going to pay more. The same goes for amenities.

Some cruise lines offer an around the world luxury cruise. Now, these can cost twenty thousand dollars or more, but for many people who’ve saved up all their lives for the experience of a lifetime, money’s no object. Several different cruise lines offer more luxurious appointments than others, and cost will also depend on your departure and destination points, as well as your length of journey options. The Carnival Cruise luxury cruise line has very nicely appointed and offers fine services for the budget minded traveler, though some of their cruises aren’t much cheaper than those charged by a more elegant line. Holland-America and Crystal Cruise lines offer longer journeys and more exotic destinations, and sightseeing packages, and so are higher priced. But if you’re in the mood to be spoiled and pampered, remember that you get what you pay for.

A luxury cruise line sets sail to just about anywhere in the world. A popular luxury cruise line like Crystal Cruise and Holland-America offer passengers luxury accommodations both at sea and on land. Passengers can enjoy four-course dinners, highbrow entertainment and plush staterooms if they wish. This type of luxury cruise line also offers the causal traveler the option to hop aboard from a number of ports of call, and for a few thousands dollars, about the same that one would pay to sail from Los Angeles, California to Alaska, a passenger can enjoy the luxury not available to them otherwise while enjoying a week or so on one of the pricier luxury lines.

A luxury cruise line such as Cunard, which has been around since the early 1900’s, offers just as many amenities as the Crystal and Holland-America lines. Other popular luxury cruise lines include the Princess, Celebrity, Regent and Princess cruises. Passengers are able to choose exotic as well as more local destinations, such as Hawaii and Alaska for moderately priced voyages that don’t skimp on luxury. If you want high-class service, exotic destinations and ports of call that many cruise lines can’t access, check out the prices for various luxury cruise lines. They’re not really much more expensive than others.

When considering a luxury cruise, shop around for sailing destinations and schedules and then determine how much money you want to spend. There are over a dozen luxury cruise lines with reputations of excellent service to choose from. Remember that luxury is more than a soft bed and a fancy dinner. Luxury is an ideal, and everyone has his or her own idea of what luxury is. Taking a luxury cruise adventure to Alaska or Hong Kong can be the experience of a lifetime, and one that shouldn’t be missed if at all possible.

Ready to embark on your dream

An Introduction To Luggage

Luggage is an important component of any travel, whether it is inland or overseas. The type, size, and style of the luggage you carry vary depending upon the mode of travel and the duration of the travel. There are many brands of luggage, handbags, and backpacks available. You can choose one that suits your requirements.

When choosing your luggage, you have to choose a set that is durable. Frequent travelers have to keep this point in mind when they select their luggage. Don’t try to purchase cheap luggage for your trips; you will end up in spending more for your luggage in the future.

Always try to purchase a luggage that has wheels. The wheels will make it easier for you to stroll through the airport, bus terminal, or a railway station. Get sturdy luggage if you are a frequent traveler. The material of the luggage should be durable enough so that it does not get ripped if it is caught in the conveyor belt. Luggage is made of 600 denier polyester, 1,000 denier Cordura, or ballistic nylon. These materials can withstand the tough handling of the luggage. The higher the denier, the stronger is the luggage.

Different airlines have different standards regarding the weight of luggage that is allowed aboard their carriers. You have to check the maximum weight allowed before checking in. Backpacks with wheels are the best luggage, as they can be used as carry-on luggage or hand luggage. A single bag or briefcase is allowed on airlines as carry-on luggage. The wheels on the backpack help you to pull your luggage when you are transferring to other flights; you can avoid carrying the luggage. It is necessary to have your luggage tags updated with your information. Some people might not even remove the old information from the tags. Never leave your luggage unattended and claim your luggage as soon as your arrive at your destination.

Benidorm is situated on Spain’s east coast (Costa Blanca),on the shores of the Mediterranean sea, and is protected on three sides from most adverse weather, by the mountains of Sierra Helada to the east, Aitana to the north and Tussal de la Cala to the west, with Benidorm’s fourth side dominated by two deeply curved bays which keep the sea tranquil, and ensure that sunbathers and swimmers remain in a safe and warm environment for most of the year.

Situated off the N-332 approx 40 minutes from Alicante airport, Benidorm is rated as Spain’s top holiday destination, due mainly to its year round temperatures, which average between 12 degrees in winter and 28 degrees in summer, and its three Blue Flag natural golden beaches.

There is an abundance of activities to be found here, for those that require the thrill a minute type holiday, with water sports that include jet skiing, kayaks, water skiing (try the cable ski off the Rincon de L’oix, at the northern end of Levante beach), parascending, scuba diving (three actual professional/amateur clubs) and snorkelling. You can also hire boats or organise fishing trips and scuba diving trips to Peacock Island, where you can swim with an extravaganza of marine life.

For the fresh water enthusiasts, there is Aqualandia with its waterfalls, zigzags, rapids, cascades, lakes, kamikaze rides, black hole wave swimming pool, or for those that don’t want the “gimmicks”, there is an Olympic swimming pool in Foietes sports complex and a swimming school Lope de Vega.

For those without webbed feet, there is Foietes sports complex, with athletics of various diversities on offer including several bowling alleys, bowls clubs, billiard clubs, go-karts, horse riding, tennis, golf, paintball, trekking, quad biking and adventure expeditions.

If this isn’t your idea of a holiday, why not just relax, soak up the sun, on one of the three beaches Benidorm has to offer. To the north there is Levante (sunrise) beach, nestled below the Old Town is Mal Pas cove and to the south is Poniente (sunset) beach, so you can sunbathe from sunrise to sunset on these golden beaches.

Levante Beach. This is generally the most populated beach area, where it is ideal for the snorkelling beginner, as there are some smooth rocks on the seabed, a home for many fish, without the swimmer getting out of his/her depth.

On this beach it is only a short walk from the waters edge to a nearby bar, cafe or restaurant, where, if your feeling in need of exercise, order a pint instead of a half, and watch the muscles in your arm work out.

Mal Pas cove. This is a small bay adjacent to the marina, where tranquil water laps onto the golden sands, with a natural wind-break of the Old Town cliffs behind you, an ideal spot for the sun worshipper. This is also an ideal spot for the snorkelling beginner, as the water is calm and fairly shallow.

Poniente beach. This is arguably the best beach in Benidorm, and it is also the longest, less crowded of the beaches, but be aware, you have slightly longer to walk for a drink or something to eat, so maybe take a picnic with you.

Benidorm does not close down in winter, like other holiday destinations in Spain and still attracts visitors all year long, due to its average temperatures and entertainment on offer. With between 800 and 1300 bars (depending on which write up you read), it’s easy to see why so many Hen and Stag parties are staged here.

There is also an extensive and varied entertainment schedule on offer, with places like Benidorm Palace, which has their extravaganza evenings with full show, 3 course meal, drinks and dancing for 40 euros.

In Villajoyosa there is Casino Mediterraneano with its Buffet dinner (3 course),wine and show for 24 euros, plus a flutter at the tables or on the bandits if you desire it.

Molino Benidorm, mainly drag show and drinks, plus a multitude of different bars offering a variety of entertainment shows consisting of singers, comedians, karaoke etc, plus a vast assortment of Disco, R &B, House music clubs such as Cafe Benidorm, Hippodrome, Loch Ness and Champions to name but a few.

For the party animal, Benidorm is probably the “Mecca de Espana”, with its main Spanish rival possibly being Ibiza and described by some as a Spanish Blackpool but with a different culture, more sun and better beaches.

This is not all that Benidorm has to offer, for with its all year round diverse entertainment for singles, couples or families, young and old alike, this is truly a holiday experience not to be missed.

Family Entertainment. Benidorm has rich and varied list of activities for families with children of all ages, amongst the best are: Terra Mitica, Terra Natura, Mundomar, Aqualandia and Desafio Medieval (medieval show, with knights jousting etc, plus dinner) all can be found on the internet for more detailed information.

Hire Car. This is a very good idea, to enable you to explore the beautiful villages and towns outside of Benidorm, and with all the major car hire companies along Avenida del Mediterraneo, just off Levante beach, such as Hertz, Avis, Europa and Centauro, so shop around for the best deal.

Excursions. Most hotels organise some sort of excursion package which you can take, but there are also five free sightseeing trips on offer, taking you to the markets at Altea, through 7 Spanish villages, Guadelest, Botanical Gardens or the wine making valley of Jalon (where you can taste the merchandise).

For the free excursions, just contact the Round Town news Tourist information office located in the Rincon side of Benidorm, opposite the hotel Melia, for your tickets. Round Town office also assists in all your holiday queries, including some Spanish phrases, for those of you that want to get into the true spirit of your holiday.

Hotels. There are apparently 145 hotels, with a total of 38,000 beds on offer, plus numerous Apartments (this is the third highest in Europe, behind London and Paris). For the people that are not afraid of heights, stay at the Hotel Gran Bali **** which is the tallest building in Spain, standing at 51 floors high.

History. Benidorm was officially born in 1325, when the lord of the Baronia de Polop awarded it a town charter to establish its own identity within Spain. The locals are fiercely proud of their heritage, mainly of a seafaring nature, where for over 200 years have had the majority of the Mediterranean tuna fishing industry. Since the 19th century, Benidorm has provided most of Spain’s sea captains and crew members.

Take a stroll through the old town and see St. James church which was built in the 18th century, and many other interesting buildings along the narrow cobbled streets and plazas. You can also take all this in doing a “Tapas and Vino” crawl, along two designated routes through the Old Town, which is much more civilised than the usual pub crawl.

Fiestas

The Three Kings – 5th Jan Carnivals- 16th-20th Feb Fallas – 14th-19th March Semana Santa – 1st-8th April Hogueras de san Juan – 19th-24th June Virgen del Carmen – 16th-22nd July Aiguera Park (musicians and shows) – 1st-31st August Fiestas Barrio L, Malsa – 11-28th-30th Sept Moors and Christians – 4th-7th Oct Spectacular free show plus fireworks – New Years Eve

Plus many other smaller fiestas, to many to list, get the full itinerary from the tourist office or Round Town News.

Restaurants. Benidorm has everything your taste buds desire, from Italian, French, Indian, German, English and of course Spanish cuisines. There are too many to list, without upsetting the rest, so go on a cuisine cruise, and go back on the diet when you get home.

Shopping. This is definitely the place where you can shop till you drop, from cheap clothes shops to more expensive ones, try Plaza del Mar shopping centre in Finestrat. Best buys probably leather coats and jackets, and of course get your cheaper spirit and cigarettes for home.

In conclusion, Benidorm is a diverse city, where you can have a fun-packed holiday or a quiet and relaxed cultural holiday, with something for everyone, but to do Benidorm full justice, you will just have to come and see it for yourselves.

Picking a Good Rental Car

If you’re looking to rent a vehicle for a weekend or longer, here are a few things you should plan for: Many car rental agencies offer their services online and pass special rates on to customers who choose to rent in this manner. Your travel agent can help you in finding which of these agencies is right for you. Some specialize in economical, compact cars while others feature sedans and even sport utility vehicles for those who like adventure.

While many agencies welcome walk-in customers, most ask that you make a reservation for the best selection of models suited for you. If you’re six feet tall, you’ll want to call ahead and make sure they have something larger than a compact vehicle.

The yellow pages have a large assortment of rental car agencies, and each is listed with special customer features and the models of the cars they specialize in. Some rental agencies also offer a very convenient customer pick-up service. If you’re going to be picking up the car yourself however, try to co-ordinate your car pick-up and return times, so you won’t be charged for an extra day.

If you’re only going to be driving a few miles, you may save money by opting for a rental with a mileage cap, which is usually 150 miles. However, unlimited mileage rates offer you more freedom. Your choice will depend on the type of holiday you are on, or the business you’ll be doing on your trip.

The number of people driving the car may also boost your rental cost. Most agencies have extra fees for additional drivers, and if the extra driver is under 21, the cost may rise yet again.

No agency will rent you a vehicle if you can’t produce your driver’s license or a credit card, and if you appear unfit to drive, forget about getting a car from them! Be careful about violating your discountcar.com.au/ car rental agreement by driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Most agencies will consider criminal charges if they find out about such behavior while their vehicle is being driven. Remember to familiarize yourself with all of the terms and conditions of the rental agreement, including what could possibly void your insurance coverage. As the renter, you are liable for all parking and moving traffic violations, both domestic and international, so please drive safely and observe all ordinances.

As a general rule, a major credit card is required at the time of rental, while prepaid credit cards, gift cards and debit/check cards are accepted for payment at the end of the rental.

In many cases, renting a car for a full week is more affordable than renting one for five days, so think about a weekend rental to save money. Should you require child seats, you should book them in advance, because they may charge a fee for each seat. Check out the state or country you will be driving in for more information about child restraint regulations.

Discount discountcar.com.au/ Car Rental Australia offers personal, business or holiday car hire with a complete range of vehicles from compacts to minibus.

Brazil Carnivals

There are a number of reasons why tourists are attracted to a certain place. One reasons could be that the place may have great historical significance, or that it may host natural wonders that people would like to see. Some examples of these include national parks or museums. On the other hand, there are some places that people go to not because of the sights but because of the events that take place in them. Some of these places include host cities to the World Cup or the Olympics, and cities or places that hold world-famous festivals. An example of such a festival is Rio de Janeiro, which has become known for its festivities.

Rio Carnival

The Rio Carnival can trace its roots in ancient African and Portuguese traditions, and the fusion of these traditions led to the birth of the carnival, which started in early in the twentieth century. During that time, samba was incorporated in the carnival being the most famous dance in Brazil. To date, the Rio Carnival is usually held four days before Ash Wednesday and it usually lasts for four days up to two weeks. During the carnival, a usual crowd of about one hundred thousand watches the parade of different samba schools, which perform dances that follow a certain theme. The themes that most schools adapt in their performances include nature, politics, music and art.

Each school also prepares a float on which they would perform and these floats and the other preparations for the carnival usually take several months. The parade usually starts at about seven in the morning and can last up to six in the evening, depending on the number of schools that perform each day.

Going to the Rio Carnival in Brazil is an exciting “adventure” that offers a good way to experience the exotic charms of the country through dance and music. It showcases the talent, the rich history, and culture of Brazil, which Brazilians are more than willing to share with the world.

‘The boys are on an organised daily routine. They rise early for morning prayers, a bit of exercise and yoga before breakfast. The volunteers are free to get up whenever we like, but I found myself joining the boys most mornings. After breakfast I would usually head to the library to prepare worksheets for the English class.’,says Catrina Sofo about her mornings while volunteering with the Orphanage in the heart of Rajasthan a South Western state in India.

Like her thousands of volunteers have given their time and energy varying from two weeks to six months to teach the boys Basic English. She had come to travel in India but found out about this opportunity that will provide her with the best experience about India that she could ever had. She jumped and grabbed the offer.

‘I loved my time at Bal Ashram(Orphanage). It’s a beautiful feeling to teach the kids, you find that when you leave, they’ve taught you many things as well. Making volunteering a part of my travel meant that I was fortunate enough to the part of India that tourists rarely see. It makes you understand people a bit better and to really appreciate the beautiful experience that India will give you! ‘,she adds.

The need for enrichment at the Orphanage is immense. They are full to the brim and the administration has staff which is lacking in numbers and enthusiasm for the enrichment of the boys at the Orphanage. There is hardly any energy left after the day to day work of the orphanage.

Through the programme Caring for orphans program one can make a lasting difference in these young lives. One can take care for children in many ways. Often no special skills are required, as volunteers are needed to spend time playing, reading, exercising and share time with the children. Your ‘time’ is what the children want along with attention. They crave for role models for them to look up to and aspire to be. Many of our host organizations are short-staffed and the volunteers’ attention gives the children the extra love they need.

A mother of one of the volunteers from the USA at the programme wrote,’Sarah volunteered with children in the village of Virat Nagar, near Jaipur. She loved the children and she was overwhelmed by the warmth of the people and beauty of India. My daughter came back with broader perspectives, greater appreciation, and a whole new sense of purpose in life.’

Looking at things from the angle of an absolute outsider does give you tremendous input to go ahead in life. This opportunity along with many others that are available and provide ‘that’ immense purpose for all of us to live the lives that we are living. If only all of us could take out time and help the ones who don’t have and at least provide them the opportunity to see the world that they would never otherwise see.

Come Share your world with the world that you might never see!
