Every state has ghost towns. Eastern and Midwestern States are no exception. At one time or another you may have driven your car right by a ghost town, not aware of it. If you are a hiker, backpacker, or a hunter, you may have walked past or through a ghost town not knowing one was there.
When people hear the words “ghost town”, they associate the term with the old, abandoned towns of the Western frontier. Many of those settlements are still standing, but in the Eastern states, the majority of old towns from the 1800’s to the early part of the 1900’s are no longer visible. And it is because they are no longer visible, that makes them virtually unknown.
Another reason why people are not aware that ghost towns exist in the east is because historians and writers have overlooked them.
History writers never took the time to research the ghost towns of Middle America and the Eastern states. Instead, there has always been the fascination with the ghost towns of the Western states. Most books or stories having to do with the “gold rush” will probably mention a Western town that once thrived; yet today it is a ghost town. Those stories have kept alive the interest about the Western ghost towns.
The excitement that surrounds the ghost towns in the Midwest and the East, becomes even more interesting, because they are more difficult to locate. And the difficulty of locating these ghost towns makes them more of a mystery.
My travels as a treasure hunter have taken me to many Eastern Ghost towns. I have hiked through miles of brush, crossed hundreds of streams and rivers and climbed steep ravines in search for the old towns of the east.
Anyone who is interested in American History should take the time to research and to explore the settlements that once populated our rural areas. It’s a great adventure and an interesting way to spend time outdoors.
Cellar Holes
In the Eastern and Midwestern States, most of the ghost towns are nothing more than a hole in the ground. The holes are cellar holes. They are what’s left of the houses that once sat on top of them.
Searching for cellar holes or ghost towns is an exciting adventure that can lead to some interesting experiences and treasures. Many times, in the areas surrounding the ghost towns, are pieces of history, lying on the ground, untouched for hundreds of years. Old bottles and pottery shards often lay scattered. I also use a metal detector to search for relics lost or buried by the past inhabitants.
The First Pioneers
The first pioneers were a hardy bunch. They had to deal with harsh winter months and hot, humid summers. In addition wild animals and infectious diseases were a constant problem. Of course, there was no running water or electricity either. Everything was done by hand, including digging the cellars for the homes.
Nor was raising a family easy. Many young babies and children died of disease. This is confirmed by the fact that as I locate old cellar holes, I often stumble upon an old tombstone erected on the property by the family, and often the grave is the burial site of a young child.
I have a lot of respect for those pioneers
How To Find Eastern Ghost Towns
Ghost towns existed as a small town or village. They were probably the first settlement of an area. Today they are holes in the ground, covered and hidden by hundreds of years of vegetation. Time, weather and man, have all played their parts in the ruins of the old towns of the Eastern and Midwestern States.
Start by browsing used bookstores. Look for old books in the local history sections. Oftentimes by reading through an old book about an area, you can gather information about an old town.
Historical Societies
Visit your local historical societies. A great amount of information on the history of your area can be found there. I have found ghost towns by searching through old newspapers that were on file at the historical societies.
Libraries
The history sections of your local libraries are another great place to search for the old settlements.
The Internet
A great tool for research now is the Internet. Researching ghost towns on the Internet is no different. For a recent television series I produced, the Internet and my computer provided valuable information for my search of a ghost town.

Are you thinking about a European vacation this year? Dont let your dream trip sink to the level of the infamous National Lampoons European Vacation! Read on for some great tips from an expert on European vacation trips and make sure that your vacation in Europe is a relaxing success.
One:
Consider choosing a travel company who specialize in European vacation packages. The do-it-yourself approach to a holiday in Europe may suit you very well but it does need a lot more planning and possibly more knowledge of languages other than English. A European vacation package company will take care of many of the basic travel and accommodation arrangements for you;leaving you free to relax and enjoy your trip.
Two:
If you are planning a European vacation tour then make sure that you leave enough time to properly get to know each country that you visit. Europe is a very diverse place. You will find much that is familiar to you in the UK and Ireland but a lot that feels very different in Turkey or rural Greece. Do take time to enjoy the cultural differences and remember, that’s why you’re going in the first place!
Three:
Try to learn a few words of language for each country that you plan to visit. You don’t need to be at all fluent, but making the effort creates a big impression. The laughs to be had when trying to communicate can break the ice and form lasting friendships. Many people speak English in the Scandinavian countries, in Holland and in Germany. Fewer of the locals speak English in France or Italy. In Spain, Greece and Portugal, English is spoken widely in the tourist costal resorts but not elsewhere.
Four:
A cheap Europe vacation is easier to organise if you have plenty time to do the planning (easiest on the internet) and a long time to spend in Europe when you arrive. Being fussy about timing and travel schedules will make it harder to travel at bargain prices. There are a large number of very low cost no frills airlines in Europe now but they may not always operate daily services. Be prepared to be flexible if you want to save money. European travel is diverse and the possibilities are endless. Dont restrict yourself to air travel. You can travel Europe by train or travel Europe by coach and still have just as much fun.
Five:
The big cities and bright lights will be more expensive than the smaller towns and rural areas. Taking France as an example: you could stay three nights in a very nice hotel in Normandy for the same price as one night in a mediocre place in central Paris.
Six:
Please don’t forget to have fun. A European vacation can offer everything you ever dreamed of – but be prepared to be flexible and – more important,be prepared to try something new. Your Europe vacation will be a much richer experience if you do.

Oxford Street, located in the City of Westminster, existed from Roman times until the 17th century primarily as a westwards route out of the City of London towards Oxford, hence its name. Today, Oxford Street is one of the busiest shopping districts and the world’s largest shopping street, having more than 300 shops that attract annually around 200 million of consumers.
The development of Oxford Street as a prime shopping area began at the start of 20th century, when the first furnishing specialists, Waring & Gillow, opened its doors in 1906. In recent years, Oxford Street represents the heart of London’s West End shopping, running for approximately a mile and a half from Marble Arch at the north east corner of Hyde Park, through Oxford Circus to St Giles’ Circus, at the intersection with Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road. Opposite to the Tottenham’s tube station, the recently refurnished, “The Tottenham” pub claims to be the only pub on the whole Oxford Street. But, with numerous clothes shops, record shops, like the famous Virgin Megastore and the HMV unit, which is the largest music store at 50,000 square feet, multiple computer games shops and department stores, including Selfridges, Oxford Street is an ideal location for those on leisure travel and time to browse through its colorful shopping windows. But although the street has multiple stores for one to choose from, these are not the most fashionable or the most expensive in the city of London. For those interested in other principal shopping areas, Knightsbridge is an excellent choice, especially because it is there where the famous Harrods department store is located.
Famous for its celebrity launches and promotions, Oxford Street becomes the focal point during the Christmas period because of the wonderful Christmas lighting tradition that began in 1959. Decorated with thousands of festive lights Oxford Street celebrates the Christmas spirit at a heavily publicized “turning-on” ceremony in mid-to-late November, when a chosen celebrity flicks a switch that illuminates the rays of light that go on until January 6.
Plans have been announced in 2005 for what could be an audacious new move to change Oxford Street from its current traffic clogged state into a pedestrian paradise. Proposals to end the gridlock feature closing the street entirely to all traffic, even buses and build a new monorail stretching from one end to the other to transport people along. Critics however have pointed out that a monorail simply caters for shoppers too lazy to walk down the entire length of the street and that this is already well served by tube which would simply require improved accessibility to existing stations and perhaps a new station half way up the street.

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II following the final sacking of Chittorgarh by the Mughal emperor, Akbar. According to legend, Udai Singh II found the site of his new capital some years before the last assault on Chittor, after coming across a holy man meditating on a hill near Lake Pichola. The old sage advised the Maharana to establish his capital on that very site – and that is how Udaipur came into existence. Surrounded by forests, lakes and the protective Aravalli Range, the new capital of Mewar was in a far less vulnerable location than Chittor.
Maharana Udai Singh II died in 1572 and was succeeded by his son, the famous Rana Pratap, who bravely defended Udaipur from subsequent Mughal attacks, and gallantly fought at the battle of Haldighati in 1576. After struggling against the Mughals, Udaipur was later attacked by the Marathas. But, unlike many other rulers in Rajasthan, the rulers of Mewar refused to be controlled by foreign invaders.
An end to bloody battles and instability came with British intervention in the early 19th century, when a treaty was signed by which the British pledged to protect Udaipur from invaders. This umbrella of protection ended when India gained independence from the British. Along with all the other princely states, Udaipur surrendered its sovereignty and became part of a united India.
The 76th Custodian of the House of Mewar, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar, has brought about incredible changes to the City Palace complex in Udaipur. His far reaching vision has resulted in the conversion of the famous palaces into Grand Heritage palace hotels, Royal Retreats and Resorts.
THE AODHI, KUMBHALGARH
After Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh is the most important fort in the Mewar region. It is an isolated and fascinating place 84 km from Udaipur, built in the 15th century by Maharana Kumbha. Because of its inaccessibility – at 1100 metres up atop the Aravalli Range – it was occupied only once in its history.. Even then, it took the combined armies of the Mughal emperor, Akbar, and of Amber and Marwar to breach its defences. It was here that the rulers of Mewar retreated in times of danger. The thick walls of the fort stretch some 36 km and enclose many temples, palaces and gardens. This mighty fort was renovated in the last century by Maharana Fateh Singhji. A leisurely walk around the huge compound, with its imposing ruins, is intriguing. The fort is open daily and entry is free.
There is also a large wildlife sanctuary here, known for its wolves. The scarcity of water holes between March and June makes this the best time to sec animals. Other wildlife includes chowsingha (the four-homed antelope), leopard, panther and sloth bear. This is one of the few sanctuaries that allow people to enter on horseback. The Aodhi Hotel, at Kumbhalgarh can organise horse safaris and jeep-safaris for adventurous guests.
A mere two kilometres from the spectacular Kumbhalgarh Fort, The Aodhi Hotel nestles like a small village on the side of the hill, blending into the landscape.
The rooms arc thematic, drawing their inspiration from Kumbhalgarh’s rich and varied wildlife; (hence the Parrot room and the Tiger). Everything, down to the smallest detail, contributes to the unique ambience. Each room has a private balcony where one can relax and enjoy the natural beauty, and catch glimpses of the wildlife at the Kumbhalgarh sanctuary.
The Aodhi boasts a superb, multi-cuisine restaurant, arrange around a central fireplace, and with an adjacent around bar. The Aodhi also has a swimming pool, and the poolside is a wonderful place for a barbecue dinner – or just to relax with a drink.
For those who enjoy nature trails, the pathway leading to the nearby lake is ideal for walking or cycling, while the hill besides the hotel offers fabulous views of the sunrise and sunset. Meanwhile the historically-minded can visit the Kumbhalgarh Fort and the 15th century Ranakpur temples.
The hotel organizes jeep safaris to the Kumbhalgarh wildlife sanctuary and fort, and also a special village safari: a trek that leads to the homes of the Garasia and the Bhil tribes, living in seclusion in the forest.
The view will take your breath away. From the sweeping crescent of’ the Shiv Niwas Palace you overlook both the city of Udaipur and the beautiful Lake Pichola. The City Palace complex of Udaipur was built over the centuries by no fewer than twenty-three Maharanas. But the Shiv Niwas Place itself was built during the early twentieth century by Maharana Fateh Singh as his private residence. Later, during Maharana Bhopal Singhji’s reign, the apartments around the awe inspiring courtyard were used to entertain royal guests. It was the vision of the late Maharana Shri Bhagwat Singhji which led to tile conversion of the palace into a luxury hotel.
Throughout Shiv Niwas Palace, the accommodation is stunning, ranging from the Imperial, Royal, and Historic suites to the deluxe rooms that command the approach to the courtyard.
Most exquisite of all is the Imperial suite, where everything from the dining table to the bed is made of silver. All the suites feature original royal furniture and paintings. Some also have intricate glass inlay work on the columns and ceilings, dating back a century. The terrace suites enjoy panoramic views of Lake Pichola, the Jagmandir island palace and the Lake Palace Hotel or the city.
The Shiv Niwas Palace offers its guests a host of facilities and attractions. There is the Paantya Restaurant, serving continental food and a wide range of Indian dishes. There is Paneera Bar, whose original mirror inlay work on the walls and ceiling – not to mention the huge mirrors and rare portraits of the Maharanas – make it one of a kind. The Palace also has a billiard room and a squash court.
As the Palace is built on the eastern bank of l.ake Pichola, a sunset stroll by the lakeside is enchantingly refreshing after a hectic day.
The Fateh Prakash Palace is part of the magnificent City Palace Complex built in the early 20th century during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singhji. Situated on the shore of Lake Pichola, it is one of the most exclusive palace hotels of India. Each suite is decorated to provide sumptuous comfort, and contains original portraits and furniture that have been in the royal family for generations.
One of tile most spectacular features of the Fateh Prakash Palace is The Durbar Hall, whose foundation stone was laid in 1909 by Lord Minto, Viceroy of India. In fact, the Durbar Hall was originally called the Minto Hall in his honour. The walls are covered with portraits of the Maharanas of the House of Mewar. This majestic edifice has hosted weddings, court occasions, formal durbars, state banquets and royal parties through the decades. The size and splendour of the hall have to be seen to be believed, and its capacity makes it the ideal venue for any large reception or party.
Overlooking the Durbar Hall is the Crystal Gallery. Originally the viewing gallery from which ladies (it the court observed the official functions, the Crystal Gallery now houses a staggering collection of crystal.
Opened to the public for the first time in 1994, this unique collection was ordered by Maharana Sajjan Singhji in 1877 from the Birmingham-based company F&C Osler, whose Calcutta showroom provided Maharana Sajjan Singhji with the inspiration for the collection. Alas, the shipment of crystal did not arrive from England until after the early demise of the Maharana.
The variety of crystal objects includes fountains, vases, crockery, furniture and beds. Alongside these gorgeous objects there are beds and chairs of silver, brocade and velvet, adding further to the opulence of the collection.

GAJNER PALACE, GAJNER:
Amid the dry and barren lands between Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, just 40 kilometres from the city of Bikaner, lies an oasis of lush and almost unreal beauty; an oasis that is the site of an incomparable palace known as ‘the jewel in the Thar Desert’.
Built by Maharaja Ganga Singhji of Bikaner, the Gajner Palace is an extravagant architectural celebration in flamingo-pink sandstone. Formerly used as a royal hunting lodge, its location is unparalleled. Set in a 6,000 acre wildlife sanctuary, the palace stands on the banks of Lake Gajner, whose hypnotic waters dreamily reflect its gardens, walls and terraces.
In winter, the palace, woods and lake become a haven for different species of migratory birds – the most renowned being the Imperial Sand Grouse. Endangered antelopes like the Chinkaras, Black Bucks, Neelgais, and other animals such as the wild boar, freely roam the area.
The Gajner Palace organises tented feasts on nearby dunes by bonfire light, where folk dancer and local musicians entertain the guests. Puppet shows are another regular feature. But boating, and horse, camel and jeep safaris are perhaps the guests’ most favoured leisure activities.
The Gajner Palace has four wings, each with its own distinctive style. Dungar Niwas houses the royal suites, which overlook the lake, and are furnished with English country house gentility with exquisitely painted ceilings. Each suite has spacious bathing and dressing areas, elaborate fireplaces, crystal light fixtures and intricate mosaic floors of exceptional beauty.
Gulab Niwas offers a breath of freshness with its green lawns and private sitting areas; Mandir Chowk is named after the temple in the courtyard around which the rooms are built, while Champa Niwas is a new jewel in the crown. Each room is indeed a private palace.
The high ceilings, intricately carved fireplaces and gold-framed mirrors of the lakeside Imperial Terrace restaurant nostalgically recall a grand and gracious era of royal dining, Nearby, The Mrigtrishna Bar, with its magnificent chandeliers, frescoed ceiling, furniture and paintings, perfectly evokes the atmosphere of a truly majestic hunting lodge.
The palace, the woods, and the wildlife, the water: All in all, the Gajner Palace is one of the world’s most perfect palace retreats.
When you think of holidays in England I wonder what images enter your head first? Maybe the famous red buses in London? Or possibly the splendour of Windsor Castle, the Tower of London or Buckingham Palace?
All of those images point to some great features of England for visitors but there is a hidden side to the country. If you try and move away from the well-trodden routes of the tourist trail you’ll find some real gems.
A great example of this is the South West of England. This is a region of the country that is sometimes overlooked by visitors and yet contains all of the key elements for a wonderful stay. You can certainly be forgiven for knowing little about this area, so maybe you’re unaware that it contains the finest Roman spa town in the country, sandy beaches, an indoor rainforest and some great surfing. A real mixture for all the family!
There are so many wonderful places to visit in the south west that it’s difficult to know where to start. Indeed, you’ll find that this article only gives you a small taster of what the region has to offer.
To begin with, let’s turn our attention to Bath, the unique city that is a World Heritage Site. The city of Bath was founded before the Romans even arrived in the British Isles but it is the Romans who expanded the city and helped to build its reputation. This was primarily due to their construction of the extensive Roman Baths complex, which is still open to visitors. Indeed, you’re still able to drink the spa water, produced from a natural spring!
The city is also renowned for its splendid and distinctive Georgian architecture – nowhere is this more evident than when you see the Georgian crescents. As you would expect of an English city, you’ll also find a more modern mix of shops, restaurants, theatres and pubs. The beauty of Bath is that the modern and the ancient seem to live side by side.
Elsewhere in South West England, Cornwall is a hidden gem that seems to have remained that way despite the fondness of the English for visiting the county on their own holidays.
The world famous Eden Project has provided a central focus for tourism in the region but it is by no means all that is on offer. You’ll find quaint, traditional seaside towns, as well as modern locations where you can relax on the beach and even enjoy the best surfing conditions in the country (St Ives is particularly popular for this pursuit).

Off the coast of mainland Spain exists a trio of magnetic isles known for their breathtaking beauty and fashionable ambiance. The largest of the three, Majorca (also known as Mallorca) is sprinkled with resorts, restaurants and bustling beaches but its popularity hasn’t kept it from becoming overdone. Majorca maintains a sense of vibrant calm infused with history and a colorful culture that’s hard to explain and even harder to replicate – it’s best to check it out for yourself.
Majorca is located in the Mediterranean Sea, the perfect spot for jetsetters, British, French and German tourists and Americans seeking a European flavor that will cancel out the past few bland vacations they’ve suffered through. Here in the Balearic Islands anything goes, so pack your skimpiest bikini, your college-age ability to stay up all night, and anything else that might come in handy as you lose yourself in a destination that can rise to any occasion.
In other words, if you want to party, you can party in Majorca. If you want to lie on the beach and take a nap, that’s also okay. You can shop, eat, sightsee, or remain hidden in the privacy of your little beach bungalow; no one is here to judge you as everyone is doing what they need to do to leave the real world behind. From the mountains to the sea, Majorca provides plenty of opportunity to realize the vacation goals you’ve brought along.
Adventurers will be delighted at the endless options for adrenaline surges. Try kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing or the singular experience of rock climbing above deep water (it’s called psicobloc), an activity that the geography makes possible here. Along the northwest coast is the Serra de Tramuntana, a mountain range characterized by steep limestone walls that dramatically drop towards the sea and a network of hiking trails. Cyclists will be challenged by the terrain here in Majorca, as much of it is serious enough to attract professional bikers here to for training sessions.
For the less exercise-inclined, consider traveling from town to town in order to soak in the spicy Spanish culture. Sample some seafood paella, Sobrassada (spicy sausage), sangria or a bottle of local wine. Palma de Majorca, the capital city, offers all the typical attractions that a sizeable and proud place tends to: a water park, double-decker tour buses, shopping centers, and various points of interest that will keep hungry-for-action tourists sated. This is also the departure point for the train ride to Soller, a lovely mountain town whose serenity balances out the frenzy of the city.
Imbibing and dancing the night away are parts of the Majorcan scene that also deserve to be acknowledged. Where else but in a foreign, fun-loving land is it appropriate to let loose to an exotic beat and stay up until the early morn? Locals tend to live by a different schedule, too, so don’t feel like you’ll miss anything if you end up sleeping until noon the next day. Magaluf has a high concentration of clubs, and if names like Tito’s, El Garito and Abraxas sound familiar or appealing, head to the road called Paseo Martimo in Palma.
If it feels like anything is missing, here’s one more quick round of highlights: free classical musical concerts during the summer, stately cathedrals, golf courses, cobblestone streets leading to charming town plazas, and plentiful lodging options. The beaches are the number one draw for most visitors, which explains why most of the activity is found around the island’s perimeter, but throughout Majorca there is plenty to enjoy.
This means that choosing a comfortable vacation rental and deciding to stay for a while might be a good idea. Establish a home base to be proud of – one that complements the overall trip rather than existing as an ultimately forgettable detail. These take the form of homeaway.com/Spain-villa-rentals/Majorca-Mallorca-Vacation-Rentals.htm Majorca Vacation Rentals, of which there are hundreds. Each one is a little different, each is waiting to please someone special, and each can be checked out online well before it’s time to start packing.
A trip to Majorca is never a tough sell, so inform your lucky travel mates of the plan and start counting down the days until you’re basking in the sun like a privileged expatriate.
