When planning a family vacation getaway, the choices can be overwhelming. What should you do? Where should you go? To make life easier, these questions should be answered before you start planning. Let’s take a few minutes and help you answer these questions before you get started with the planning.

What Should You Do?
How does skiing fresh powder of Vail’s Blue Sky Basin, or relaxing in the white sand of Hawaii’s beaches and hitting a hole in one at one of Myrtle Beach’s many golf courses sound to you? Ski, beach and golf vacations are great choices for families.

Skiing Vacations
Many resorts offer a plethora of activities for you and your family. While you are skiing fresh powder, your children can be supervised by a certified ski instructor while enrolled in ski school. After that lesson, you can meet up with them and they will be happy to show you what they learned. When the day ends, be sure to explore the town. Ski towns are notorious for some of the best shopping and fine dining. If you want to take a day off from skiing to catch your breath, try ice skating, toboggan runs or just sit by a fire with a good book. When it comes time to plan a ski vacation, try to plan at least 5 to 6 months ahead of time. This is when you can find the best deals and you shouldn’t have to worry about the hotel you want to stay in, completely booked.

I have found that a little research goes a long way. After you choose your hotel, see if they have any packages or specials available. Most of the time hotels and resorts will offer a bit of a discount on lift tickets and other activities. If a special or package is not available, make sure to buy your lift tickets in bulk to save some money. Try to buy a 3 or 4 day pass versus buying individual tickets each day. Often times, these lift tickets will be good for more than 1 resort in the area.

Ski Vacation Destinations.
The Rocky Mountains of Colorado offer many good resorts to choose from. Some favorites include Telluride, Vail and Breckenridge. Telluride Ski Resort was built in the 1970’s and along with it came cultural events, festivals, music and more. People come to this town year after year for the wonderful skiing and other fun activities.
If skiing is what you are all about, Vail is the place to go! It has just been named number 1 for the 14th time in 19 years in Ski Magazines “Top 50 Resort Guide”. Vail offers world class skiing, fabulous nightlife and many fine dining options.
Breckenridge is a 147 year old Victorian town. People flocked to this town in the 1800’s in search of riches in the form of gold. Now this town is a haven for skiers of all types. This town offers many activities for families and travelers.

Beach Vacations
Beach resorts can be perfect for your next family vacation getaway. Some of the best resorts are in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

Mexico
Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations. It is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Los Cabos features luxury hotels, championship golf courses and some of the best sport fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking and much more.

The Caribbean
The Cayman Islands offer many things for many people. 99% of the travelers visit Grand Cayman Island. It is easy to see why people go here. Of the islands this island offers the most when it comes to resorts and hotels. The fabulous snorkeling and scuba diving is not to be missed. When diving, you will think you are in a pet shop aquarium. The fish are abundant and the stingrays are gentle and fun to watch. If time permits, rent a Jeep and cruise around the Island.

Hawaii
Hawaii offers many choices for the traveling family. Each island is unique and offers something for everyone. Kauai is less touristy but still offers much to do. The surfing and snorkeling are not to be missed. Be sure to take a day and drive up to Waimea Canyon. This canyon offers many photo opportunities, and spots to get out and hike near beautiful waterfalls. Maui offers white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Maui also offers great sightseeing and wonderful shopping. Of the islands, Hawaii, also known as “The Big Island” is the largest. Here you can visit the only active volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. You will also find wonderful resorts, pristine beaches, great nightlife, fine dining and shopping.

Golf Vacations
Right about now, you may be thinking “How can a golf vacation be good for my whole family?” Well, many golf resorts offer more than just golf. While you are out hitting the lynx, your family can be enjoying a beach, pool, or shopping. When you are done on the course you can meet up and head to one of the many fine dining establishments near your resort. Many golf vacations can be combined with a beach getaway. Mexico, Hawaii and the United States offer some of the best golf near some of the best beaches. These resorts offer many different specials and packages that can be tailored to fit your specific wishes.

Whatever your next vacation entails for you, you will not be disappointed with any one of the recommendations above. Be sure to see all you can see. The bottom line is to enjoy yourself and relax!

Is a trip to Scotland in your near future? If you are heading to this country steeped in history and romance, why not stay at one of the many Edinburgh B&B castles, inns, and homes? These places are absolutely geared to making couples feel like they are royalty… and they are much more affordable than you might think!

Here, we will take a look at why a vacation at Edinburgh beats a sterilized hotel room hands down!

#1: The Assistance

Never forget that the innkeepers of any establishment make the best concierges around. Unlike those you will find at the major hotel chains, they do not send you places because they want tips – they send you places because they want you to experience the “real” Edinburgh! They also want to assist you as part of your stay at their residence, and they will typically inspire to go out of their way to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. Though many hotels say they offer this kind of service, they simply cannot match the personal touch of an accommodation.

#2: The Atmosphere!

You will meet new people at an Edinburgh B&B during both meals and in coming and going. In fact, many couples make lifelong email friends when they stay at an Edinburgh bed and breakfast. This is due to the fact that innkeepers encourage interactivity; it is part of the overall “homey” atmosphere that attracts so many people to this type of overnight accommodation. Even if you are traveling on business, you still could benefit from staying at a relaxing Edinburgh inn instead of resting at a more “sterile” location.

#3: The Ease of Reservations!

With the advent of the Internet, it is now completely easy to book a stay at almost any Edinburgh B&B. Simply find the one you like online (most include pictures and prices in easy-to-find areas of their websites) and set your dates. Get your credit card ready, and with a few clicks… Voila! You are ready to spend at least one evening (if not several) at Edinburgh for a vacation! It is never been a better time to travel!

#4: The Price!

Finally as in most of the times, prices play significance in influencing your decision. You are likely to be on a budget unless you have strike lottery. If so, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that many of the Edinburgh B&B locales are quite affordable. Even if they are slightly more than a hotel room that is part of an international or national chain, they offer more room, usually better locations, and a feel for how local folks actually live. And it is very difficult to put a price on a unique vacation.

For an unforgettable vacation, head straight to an Edinburgh bed and breakfast. Chances are, it will not be the last time you visit this amazingly engaging country peppered with cultural significance and historical.

An Exciting Arrival in France

I had spent many months planning my escape. It relied on so many factors that I felt like a player in the Crystal Maze. All the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle were starting to take shape and I was about to cut free!

I was moving lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels to France from London to start a new life after 15 years stuck in pollution and the rat race. I had bought a 300 year old house 3 years previously in a small village in SW France, in the Languedoc. A small amount of work had been done on the house, but was in no way it habitable.

I had sold my house in London after many false starts, lies from potential buyers and finally, in vague desperation, accepted an offer at a lower price than the asking price. On the web, I had found a South African guy who specialised in moves to France. The date was set. The furniture and 37 boxes were packed and I was ready.

The removers arrived. 2 hours later, a small van that looked like it had seen better days was filled with my worldly possessions, driven away and I was requested to join van and man later on that day. I duly arrived at the mans’ home to be told by his wife that their best friend, who also does deliveries to Europe, was killed in a crash a few days previously. She asked me to make sure that I kept her husband awake during the long trip! Into the very uncomfortable van, Mike, the van driver, told me that he had never driven this van before. The gears groaned and crashed and we swayed along the main route from London to the port of Dover. Our ferry crossing was due at midnight. He happily announced that he had no intention of stopping during the trip, but was annoyed that the small diesel tank of his van meant that he was going to be forced to stop more than he desired, to fill her up.

Try making conversation to a stranger, who was on a different planet to the norm, at 4 am, while the van was being stretched to its beyond maximum speed! No sleep- did not dare to- many coffee and diesel stops- a bad sandwich and a sore brain from creating conversation on subjects that I didn’t know anything about. 24 hours later, we arrived in my village. All stores and restaurants closed, so had to visit neighbours to beg for food and beer.

My house was now filled with boxes and furniture. In order to be able to live vaguely comfortably in the house, I had about 6 weeks of renovation work. Day 4- all went very wrong. Being the end of January, the weather can be very unpredictable. Well, I awoke to a light falling of snow. This was the first fall for 15 years. I continued to renovate. Snow started falling more heavily. Lights flickered, cut, came back on, and then cut. As my house relies totally on electricity for cooking, heat and hot water, this was mildly alarming. Inside temperature was nudging zero degrees C.

The next day, more snow fell, and still no electricity. The river Cesse was rising at an alarming rate and could threaten to flood the village. I continued to work, wearing 4 layers of damp clothes. My hands no longer belonged to my body and my feet were suffering from rising damp. I ate some cold food and dreamt of a hot cup of tea. By 5 pm, the whole village was covered by 12 inches of still falling snow, electricity was still a distant memory, and the river was about 8 inches from causing flood damage. The fire department was evacuating old people who may be threatened by flood, the Mayor was in attendance, and doorways were being blocked against rising water.

I decided that my life hung in the balance. I needed heat, hot food and a dry, warm bed. So, armed with a 5 litre box of red wine, I ventured out to see if friend number 1 was at home. She was not. I was soaked through by now in minus zero temperatures. Knocked on friend number 2s door. They were in! Also, they had a log fire burning, electricity and a beef stew cooking! Paradise! They took me in, looking and feeling like a dog that had fallen into an Artic flow. I took off all my 4 layers of wet clothes, borrowed dry ones, and sat , unmoving, by the fire for an hour. My voice had returned, as had my appetite and thirst. I spent a blissful 24 hours with them- fully recovered, but with a sore head form too much red wine. I returned to my home, and was overjoyed that the electricity had returned and that I was able to continue my work.

The floods did not arrive and no damage was done. The electricity had been cut due to trees falling on the wires. I have to admit that I did have momentary thoughts of questioning my madness of leaving an efficient city like London and decamping into a small 1000 population village of Bize Minervois, Aude, Languedoc.

Summer is now here. The weather is now 35 C every day and the river is my swimming pool. The cigales are screeching outside, the swallows and house martins swoop through the village in huge numbers, and all is wonderful in the world! The property market is very slow, though it is a perfect time for buyers looking for a retirement home and/or a holiday home on the west coast of the Mediterranean.

My baptism of snow seems like a distant nightmare.

Would you like to know what the real interesting sights in Cologne Germany are? In this two-part article, I am going to let you know about 18 of my good ones.

If you would like to know something about Cologne Germany and its history, visit the Cologne link at the end of this article for information about that. In this two-part article I’ll give you 18 insider tips of Cologne – short and sweet – so that you can print them out and easily scour the sights and restaurants.

First, once you arrive in the city, go to the tourist office. It’s located at Cologne Cathedral in a street called “Unter Fettenhennen” (under fat hen ;-) .

Now, shall we get started? Great!

Sightseeing and Culture

1. The city hall (Hansasaal) was built in 1330. Its Renaissance arcade (16th century) and tower (15th century) had been added later. The building complex suffered extensive damage during World War 2 and underwent reconstruction until 1972. It’s located at Alter Markt.

2. The City Gates are awesome. Three of the total of twelve city gates from the mediaeval city fortifications (1180 – 1220) have been preserved and are still used today for various purposes. Just look for the Severinstor, the Eigelsteintor and the Hahnentor. The smaller Ulrepforte and restored sections of the city walls are to be found along the Sachsenring circular boulevard. Also, all of them have a U-Bahn stop.

3. The 4711 House, the new Gothic head office of the famous “Eau de Cologne” manufacturer with a carillon that chimes every hour, is located opposite the opera in Glockengasse. The number “4711″ refers to house-numbering system adopted by the French occupying power in 1795. For greater clarity, all private houses were numbered sequentially from 1 – 7 404.

4. The Cologne gardens (Flora/Zoo) were landscaped in 1863 according to designs by Peter Josef Lenné and Joseph Maria Olbrich. It further contains an botanical garden, which was added in 1914. The site was destroyed during World War 2. Once it was completely restored, it now has a stock of plants including approx. 12 000 species. Cologne Zoo is located directly adjacent to the gardens.

5. Cologne cathedral with its two spires 157 m. in height, has been the city’s most famous landmark for centuries and the most well-known architectural monument in Germany. It took 632 years (!) until construction of the largest German cathedral was completed. Visit smart-travel-germany.com/cologne-cathedral.html” target=”_new smart-travel-germany.com/cologne-cathedral.html for further information and some images of Cologne Cathedral.

6. Cologne Germany is a city of churches. As in no other German city, twelve large Roman collegiate and monastery and convent churches are located in the confined area within the boundaries of the mediaeval city wall, churches which rank among the most important in Western Europe.

7. Shopping Passages — Cologne has some; I am just going to tell about two of them. The Neumarkt Passage, located at Neumarkt, and the Olivandenhof, located right between Neumarkt and Breite Strasse. In this glitter world, you are going to find stores with clothes, foods, non-food, many taverns and pubs, etc. Just a good time to take a loooong rest… ;-)

By the way, right at Neumarkt starts Germany’s most visited shopping mile — the Schildergasse. Hourly 17,760 people come in flocks through this “street.”

8. Okay, this now is outside Cologne, but definitely worth a day trip. The amusement park located near Cologne is called Phantasialand. It offers a wide selection of attractions, ranging from the old Berlin steam roundabout, including a wild-water course and extending to the Space-Center, which draw several million visitors every year to the southern gates of Cologne. Children in particular love the fantastic world with its many adventures. Phantasialand is open daily between April 1st and October 31st.

Now, visit smart-travel-germany.com/cologne.html” target=”_new smart-travel-germany.com/cologne.html for further information, and for some pictures of Cologne Germany.

Fine, that was the first part. We passed some quite interesting sights today. In the next part we will cover 10 TOP bars and restaurants. Look forward to it!

Orlando, Florida is a vacationer’s paradise. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to have children to enjoy the theme parks and attractions in Orlando, which include Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and the Disney-MGM Studios. Indeed, Orlando is a wonderful, magical place – and a destination you’ll certainly want to visit more than once.

One of the challenges that many people face is finding a cheap Orlando vacation. After all, airfare, hotel accommodations, meals, and theme park entrance fees can take a big bite out of your pocketbook. Here are some tips on booking an Orlando vacation at a bargain price….

1. Purchase a Package

Although some people are intent upon purchasing airfare, hotel accommodations, and park passes separately, the truth is that you’ll get a much better deal if you buy an Orlando vacation package. Those who sell Orlando vacation packages get deeply discounted rates, and can pass those savings on to you. Although you may suspect that some packages are too good to be true, once you check out the reputation of the sellers, you are likely to find that the offers are legitimate.

2. Be Flexible in Your Travel Dates

The more flexible you are in your travel dates, the more likely you are to find a cheap Orlando vacation package. If you’re insistent upon traveling during peak periods, you’re going to pay premium prices. If, on the other hand, you are able to travel in the non-peak season, you’ll find a plethora of bargains from which to choose.

3. Look for the Extras in Accommodations

Travel packages vary widely in the types and length of accommodations offered, as well as the tickets that are included. It pays to do your research and find the package that offers you the biggest bang for your bucks. You may, for example, find a cheap Orlando vacation for only $249 per person, double occupancy. It could include such features as four nights of hotel accommodations near the Disney Main Gate plus two nights of hotel accommodations in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

4. Look for the Extras in Tickets

Some Orlando vacation packages offer an amazing array of tickets and passes, so be sure to find the one that best suits your interests and needs. For example, you may find a package that’s discounted 65% from what you’d normally pay, and that still includes two one-day passes to Disney or Universal, two Kennedy Space Center tickets, Sterling Casino Day Cruise tickets, dinner theater tickets, and so forth.

5. Consider a Timeshare

If you love all that Orlando has to offer, consider purchasing a timeshare in the area. A timeshare provides you with access to all of Orlando’s attractions while giving you a place to call “home.” As those who own timeshares can attest, it’s a great feeling to know that you have a place to stay while you’re in Orlando – particularly if that place is a resort. For those who are looking for a cheap Orlando vacation and who don’t own a timeshare, there are resort companies that offer incredibly cheap Orlando vacations in exchange for listening to a sales presentation. You really can’t beat the prices when all you have to do in return is give up an hour or two of your time.

Don’t let cost keep you from visiting one of the most magical places in the United States. Find a cheap Orlando vacation and enjoy all that the Sunshine State has to offer!

All of these cities have award winning Bed and Breakfasts so no matter if you are traveling for business or pleasure you will want to stay at a North Carolina bed and breakfast as opposed to a generic hotel.

The problem when you visit North Carolina is choosing which bed and breakfast to stay at when considering a trip to a particular city. However, this is not a problem because you can go online and visit the various bed and breakfasts available and then book your reservation at the one that best flatters your budget and personality. Give North Carolina bed and breakfasts a chance the next time you travel to the Tarheel state and you will never choose to stay at a regular hotel again.

In 2004, the number of incoming tourists who visited the Bulgarian spa centres increased by approximately 20 percent, compared to 2003. The well developed network of private cosmetic surgery and dental clinics offer services at prices several times lower than the lowest in the European Union, and this fact has attracted the attention of the large insurance companies that cover their clients’ medical expenses. They are more willing than before to pay for trips to the east, where treatment is many times cheaper.

Plastic surgery not covered by medical insurance also attracts clients with prices that are up to five times lower. The good value of medical treatment is topped up with high-quality service: foreign patients in Bulgaria have a wide choice of doctors and clinics because in the mid-1990s many of the best physicians in the country, disappointed with their low state salaries, set up private surgeries and clinics.

Mineral water treatment

Mineral water treatment is particularly popular among foreign tourists, because Bulgaria
boasts more than a thousand mineral springs scattered throughout the country. The water content in many of them is similar to those in world-renowned spas like Baden-Baden and Vichy.

Some present-day Bulgarian spas were built on the sites of ancient Roman thermae or Turkish baths. The best-known balneology and mud bath therapy centres are Pavel Banya, Hisar, Velingrad, Narechen, Vurshets, Kyustendil and Momin Prohod, near Kostenets. They specialise in the treatment of different ailments, depending on their water content.

Hisar, located among the impressive ruins of an ancient Roman fortress in the plain between the Balkan Mountains and Plovdiv, is recommended for renal and gastrointestinal illnesses. Sapareva Banya sprang up around the hottest water spring in Bulgaria. Narechen specialises in neural disorders, Pavel Banya in orthopaedic illnesses and traumas, and Sandanski in pulmonary diseases. Two large seaside resorts, Albena and Pomorie, offer mud bath treatment.

Most of these centres also offer special rehabilitation and toning programmes. The prices vary, depending on the treatment. For example, a 10-day anti-stress programme, including aromatherapy, massage, and Iye-phoresis, costs less than 100 Euros; a flve-day treatment of rheumatic pain is from 70 to 110 Euros. Accommodation is between 20 and 70 Euros a day, full board.

Slimming centres

Other popular destinations are the slimming centres. The most popular clinic for non-medicinal treatment of obesity is located in the Black Sea resort of Sts. Constantine and Helena. There, a mild form of medical starvation is practised under constant medical supervision, in combination with a daily allowance of one kilogramme of raw fruit, and healthy eating habits.

The stay in the sanatorium can vary from 10 to 20 days, and the package is between 500 and 2,000 Euros, depending on the length of the treatment. It includes accommodation in a four-star hotel, daily doctor’s rounds, personal consultation with the centre’s head physician, the development of an individual dieting and nutrition schedule for each patient upon leaving, and medical examinations.

Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery also attracts health tourists with its prices and services. The plastic and cosmetic surgery clinics which opened in the mid-1990s turned out to be too many, and the severe competition forced their owners to invest in modern equipment, good specialists, and a range of amenities for in-house patients. Besides, they had to keep their prices low.

Whereas in Germany a woman will pay from 6,000 to 10,000 Euros for a bosom boost, the most expensive clinics in Bulgaria perform the operation for 2,500 to 3,000 Euros. The ratio between other services is similar.

Face-lifting under full anaesthesia is hardly over 1,200 Euros, complete lips correction is not higher than 450 Euros, and liposuction costs 300 Euros.

Dental services

Another popular goal of health tourism in Bulgaria is dental services. The private dental surgeries in the bigger towns are numerous, and the prices, calculated in accordance with the Bulgarian standard of living, are incredibiy low, compared to prices in western Europe. Some surgeries have dual pricing for Bulgarians and foreigners; so, check in advance.

The prices in Sofia, Burgas, Varna and Plovdiv are relatively the same: from 10 to 15 Euros for an initial examination, from 15 to 20 Euros for cleaning of caries and a photo polymer filling, and from 20 to 30 Euros for the treatment of pulpitis.

What does the law in Bulgaria say?

Bulgarian legislation grants foreign citizens the right to treatment in all medical establishments in the country. In case of emergency, foreigners can get help in the nearest clinic.

The head of the respective medical establishment has to inform the patient’s insurer immediately about the necessary treatment, except in emergencies.

Short-term foreign visitors to Bulgaria who do not insure themselves according to internal regulations have to pay for their medical treatment in accordance with the price list of the respective medical institution.

The clinic or other medical establishment must inform the patient of the relevant costs prior to the commencement of treatment.
