Ahhh … summer on Cape Cod. Relaxing on a sandy beach, listening to the soothing sound of the surf. Your mind just floats away as the warmth of the summer sun eases the stress of the daily grind. What a perfect place for a summer vacation.
But wait! It’s not summer! It’s after Labor Day – considered early fall on the Cape. Is Cape Cod any place for a vacation other than in summer? The answer is – absolutely!
Summers spent at the Cape are wonderful, but they are very crowded due to the fact that schools are out and the majority of families vacation sometime between mid-June and Labor Day. If you have flexibility to vacation at times other than summer, than you are in luck!
Cape Cod is a wonderful place to visit almost anytime in spring and fall as well. Yes, you may need to forego the beach experience, but there is plenty to do, and the summer crowds are generally non-existent. Late spring is a great time, with plenty of lodging available as early as April. Most lodging establishments stay open well into October, and some are now open year-round due to the increased popularity of off-season travel. And of course there is the benefit of reduced rates and specials as more and more places try to attract your business. Off-season is an excellent time to try that expensive Bed & Breakfast or fancy resort you always wanted to indulge yourself in but could not afford in-season.
Dining options are plentiful in late spring and fall, too. Again, most places stay open well into October, partly to take advantage of those seeking the beautiful New England foliage, partly because it is becoming more and more popular to travel off-season.
The ferries to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket from Woods Hole run regular schedules beginning in early April and running through early October. But – they also run year-round, so don’t rule out a pleasant trip to “the islands” in the off-season. Just be sure to check the schedules ahead of time.
One of the nicest things about an off-season vacation on the Cape is the quiet, less rushed pace. Travelling popular Routes like 6A and 28 are a breeze compared to summer. People are a bit less occupied with just “getting there” and more interested in enjoying the journey. Even the locals seem less hurried.
Hmm, let me see – driving is more relaxing, parking is easier, shops are less crowded, lodging is less expensive, restaurants rarely have a wait – off-season sure sounds like a great time to vacation on Cape Cod to me!

Kelly Tarlton created his underwater world in Auckland’s disused stormwater holding tanks and sadly lived only seven weeks after his dream opened in January 1985. As the world’s largest fish aquarium viewed from the world’s longest underwater acrylic tunnels it is now Auckland’s premier tourist attraction.
Before touring the aquarium it is advisable to watch the 12-minute audio-visual show in the theatre. Here you will learn about Kelly Tarlton’s shipwreck explorations and how he and a team of volunteers went about building Underwater World.
A moving walkway will then transport you through a 111-meter (365 feet) clear acrylic tunnel. You will be surrounded by over 1500 fish of 40 different species and more than 50 sharks and stingrays. The refractive index of the acrylic and water makes the fish appear approximately 30% smaller than they really are. Nearly four million liters of water are circulated every two hours with 10% fresh seawater being added each day.
Auckland, with a population of 1.3 million people, is home to one third of New Zealanders. It is the country’s industrial and commercial center and the entry point for most overseas visitors.
One other attraction not to miss while in Auckland is Heritage Park, a 12-hectare (30 acres) theme park that is a microcosm of Kiwi culture.

The name means “Mountain of Gold” and the area is golden to lovers of the outdoors. If you want to make an escape from the city and really get back to nature, this is the park for you. It is full of flower lined hiking trails, a bluff walk where you can view families of sea lions below, and many areas to camp. When you consider this location, you need to know it is more primitive than most sites. You have to bring all your own supplies and carry them in to reach your camping location.
While you are in California, you may want to make a stop at Angel Island Park. It’s located in San Francisco Bay. It’s not the easiest location to reach. You will have to get there by ferry boat. But, once you arrive, you can enjoy the beauty of the night sky and quiet about the camping side of island, or look over to the shimmering San Francisco skyline and see the Golden Gate Bridge from a completely new vantage point. There are limited campsites and trails so you can tour the island and see the side that is a little more civilized with shops and bike rentals.
If you’re heading north, you may want to set you sites on South Dakota and Fort Welikit Family Campground. While it’s near the attractions such Mount Rushmore and various parks and caves, it’s also a great recreation area in itself built around three lakes and offering trail rides for equestrians. In addition to tent and RV accommodations, cabins can also be rented on site.

Your main defense is to pack your essentials in your carry-on. This can be difficult to do, especially if you’re traveling with small children and you have to fill the carry-on with books and activities to keep them occupied during the flight. Nevertheless, it’s essential to find a little extra space for changes of underclothes, your toothbrushes, and other things you won’t want to spend money replacing once you arrive.
