Everyone loves digital cameras and the ease of operating without film, but storing all the images can be an issue. At home I like to store them on my laptop and back them up to CDs.

If you are going on vacation for a week and plan on taking lots of pictures, you should know how many images you can you store on your laptop.

Most consumer shoot in compressed JPEG mode, and the images are between 250k bytes and perhaps 1.4M bytes. A 1 GB CF will hold as many as a thousand or more images. If you are like me it is easy these days to shoot a lot of pictures in a very short time. You could buy another CF or transfer the images to your laptop.

Laptops do not hold all that much data. How many gigs of disk capacity do you have left on your personal laptop? The newer ones will come with 40 or even 100 GB drives, but most people don’t have ones that new, and many also have a bunch of stuff loaded already. So, check out the size of your HD and see how much space is left for your photos. If your laptop has a CD burner bring extra blank CDs so you can burn the photos. It was the most spectacular sight I have ever seen. Fields with row after row of colorful, vibrant, dancing tulips! There is only one place in the world to get such a majestic view and that is the Kukenhof Gardens near Amsterdam, Holland. Over 70 acres of a beautiful park including over 7,000,000 (that’s right – million) tulips and other flowers are on exhibit. My pictures explain much better than I can write just how fantastic these fields and gardens are to see.

I took a river boat cruise to see the sights of Holland. I decided on the 7 day Holland Viking River Boat Cruise because my (childhood) friend loves gardening. Me, I’d rather spend time in a museum. We started in Amsterdam. Here I was able to feed my hunger for museums by visiting the Anne Frank House, Rembrandt House and Rijksmuseum. The Rijksmuseum was part of the cruise and included a guide. The Rijksmuseum (National Museum) set in its historic building is the largest museum in the Netherlands. It included the famous Rembrandt painting called “The Night Watch”. Our guide furthered our education explaining that the picture is a militia painting. It shows a group portrait of a division of the civic guard. Rembrandt depicted the group of militiamen in an original way. He did not paint them in a neat row or sitting at their annual banquet, rather, he recorded a moment. This moment is when the group of militiamen has just moved into action and are about to march off. She explained the use of light and movement along with modern day x-ray to discover Rembrandts painting techniques.

We were supposed to be on the Viking Pride but a barge accident in the Rein River prevented our ship from making it to Amsterdam. Instead of canceling the cruise, Viking pulled the Viking Sun out for us to cruise on for the first few days. This fairly new ship and the crew made us feel just as welcome as our Sun crew did when we finally boarded our original ship later in the week. Both boats offer a comfortable lounge, library, and restaurant.

We delighted in the centuries-old windmills of Kinderdijk and learned about the country’s ongoing battle with the sea at the Zuiderzee Museum. We also admired the artistry of hand-made porcelain in the Delftware factory, considered ourselves experts at discovering the “fakes”, and dropped a pretty Euro on some souvenirs.

Tours often included walks over cobblestones like in the village of Enkhuizen. I discovered the owner of a “Ship in the Bottle” shop who had recently been hired as an extra in a movie about the Ship-Boys of Hoorn (a statue of which we later got to see). Mr. Bontekoe was a man who was famous in the 17th century because he survived an explosion on his ship. They made a journal about his terrible trip and later on they made a children’s book called “The Ship-boys of Bontekoe”. That book was a bestseller back in 1924 and is now being made into a film. My “actor” friend impressed me when he showed me the old water lock in his building that still could control the water running through the town.

We learned about Edam (and the cheese), Marken, Volendam, Arnhem and Rotterdam. We learned the role of Arnhem during WWII and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kindedijk, home of working wind mills. More importantly, we learned where the phrase “Dutch treat”, “going Dutch” and “Dutch door” all came from!

Few houses in 1914 were being built with central vacuum systems, intercoms and indirect lighting. But only the best was a must for Henry and Georgiana Pittock who, at the ripe ages of 79 and 70 respectively, moved into their new mansion on a hill with a breathtaking view of their beloved city of Portland, Oregon.

The hardworking couple had seen Portland develop from a forest clearing into a bustling business center and Henry’s business acumen and Georgiana’s community spirit had contributed considerably to the development.

English-born Henry Lewis Pittock had originally journeyed west on a wagon train from Pennsylvania in 1853. He was just 17 years of age and in his own words “barefoot and penniless.” He immediately went to work for Thomas Jefferson Dryer’s Weekly Oregonian newspaper. Seven years later he bought the paper, changing its format to the daily paper still being published today. He also married the 15-year-old Georgiana Martin Burton.

Pittock proceeded to build a business empire incorporating real estate, banking, railroads, steamboats, sheep ranching, silver mining and the pulp and paper industry. Georgiana dedicated herself to improving the lives of the community’s women and children. She helped found the Ladies Relief Society in 1867, whose Children’s Home provided care, food and shelter for needy children.

The couple were known for their quiet reserve, community spirit and love for the outdoors. Georgiana loved gardening and kept a terraced flower garden at the mansion replete with many varieties. She adorned her house with cut flowers and originated Portland’s annual Rose Festival.

A vigorous outdoorsman, Henry rode horses in the Rose Festival parades and was a member of the first party credited with climbing Mt. Hood, whose spectacular peak can be viewed from the mansion’s drawing room. On one of his climbing expeditions someone suggested that the group sit down and rest. Henry thundered, “The man who sits down never reaches the top.”

In 1909 Henry and Georgiana commissioned a young architect named Edward T. Foulkes to design and build their mansion on a hill. It was completed five years later, but sadly the loving old couple was to enjoy only four years together in the home of their dreams before Georgiana passed away in 1918 at the age of 73. Henry died one year later.

In keeping with their community spirit, the Pittocks had hired Oregon craftsmen and artisans and used only northwest materials to build the house. The final estate included the mansion, a three-car garage, a greenhouse and the Italianate gate lodge/servants’ residence on 18.6 hectares (46 acres), 300 meters (985 feet) above downtown Portland.

Members of the Pittock family remained in residence at the mansion until 1958 when Peter Gantenbein, a grandson who had been born in the house, put the estate on the market.

The threat of demolition by land developers caused concerned citizens to raise the funds necessary for preservation. Recognizing this popular support and agreeing that the mansion had value as an historic resource, the city of Portland purchased the estate in 1964 for $225,000. Fifteen months were spent restoring it and the Pittock mansion was opened to the public in 1965.

The eclectic architectural design and lavishly decorated interior, including many family artifacts, make the Pittock mansion today a living memorial to the Pittock family and their contribution to the blossoming of Portland and the Pacific Northwest.
