Fun in Delaware

Delaware is a winter wonderland in February but hosts numerous events throughout the month that make a great weekend getaway or fun additions to a family vacation. Start with the Winter Ice Harvest at the Hanford Mills Museum. The museum fills the icehouse annually, assuming that the ice is thick enough. They fill the Ice House by hand and visitors are allowed to help do some cutting when the ice is thick enough. They also sell great soups to warm you up at lunch, show historic videos of ice harvesting and have horse drawn wagon rides.

The Biggs Museum of America Art in Dover features a variety of monthly events that rotate through the museum. The museum is located in historic Dover and the museum features the Biggs collection. There are fourteen galleries that are arranged in chronological order and the Reception Hall is used for temporary exhibitions. The museum was founded by Sewell Biggs. In Port Penn you find the Port Penn Interpretive Center. This was an 1886 schoolhouse that is now a folk life museum in a 250 year old village next the marsh and Delaware River. There are exhibits on town life, fishing, fur trapping, hunting decoys, community baseball and local artwork.

Dr. John Finney built the Amstel House in the 1730s in New Castle. The house reflects the town’s unique style and many prominent historical individuals have resided in the house. These individuals included the Delaware Signers of the Declaration of Independence, a governor and George Washington attended a wedding in the parlor of the house. Tours are available of the house and are approximately 40 minutes in length. The Delaware Museum of Natural History is located in Wilmington and features life-sized dinosaurs, a Great Barrier Reef, Butterfly Garden and African Watering Hole. The museum is open daily and excellent for children.

The Loblolly Acres is a Christmas tree farm that has a lot of activities available at various times of the year. The farm is located in Woodside and allows the public to experience a real farm. They have a gift shop, petting zoo, corn maze, pumpkin patch, pony rides, nature trails, horse drawn carriages and hayrides. Whistlepig Day is an annual event in Killens Pond State Park. Visitors can enjoy hikes, hayrides and hot cocoa. There will lots of fun indoors as well as out.

The best time to go to Italy could well be, well, anytime. In reality the best time is
between April and June as the flood of school holidays hasnt yet hit the roads, the
countryside is at its fullest bloom and the weather isnt uncomfortably hot yet.

When deciding at which time of the year to go to Italy it may be worth scheduling
around a couple of festivals as they are invariably spectacular occasions. Here is a
shortlist of the best on offer:

Festa dei Ceri, Umbria in MayIl Palio, Siena in July and AugustCarnevale, Venice in
FebruaryFesta di San Gennaro, Naples in DecemberI Candelieri, Sardinia in
AugustPalio delle Quattro Antiche Repubbliche Marinare, Venice / Pisa / Amalfe /
Genoa in May / JuneProcessione dei Serpari, Abruzzo in MaySa Sartiglia, Sardinia in
FebruaryUmbria Jazz, Perugia in JulyIn August prices tend to skyrocket across the
country along with the weather, so is best avoided. However, that is not true of the
whole of the country. In a country such as Italy the weather is incredibly diverse,
ranging from stifling heat in the low-lands of Florence to the snow-capped chills of
the Alps and the Dolomites.

Overall you can expect long hot summers the further south you are, with Sicily and
Sardinia enjoying the best of all, where sea swimming is possible right into mid
October.

Italy is a fairly expensive country with accommodation being the single most costly
aspect of a trip. You may find cheaper accommodation out of the city centres and in
surrounding satellite towns. Expect to pay around 12 to 20 euros for a youth hostel,
25 to 45 euros for a basic pensione or small hotel, and around 70 to 120 euros for a
mid-range hotel.

Eating out is an incredible experience throughout Italy. As any Italian will tell you,
there really is no such thing as Italian food, as each region tends to be known for its
particular specialities. Budget for around 20 to 35 euros for a great full-course meal
with a house wine on average.

The delectable Cucina Italiana is never far away in Italy. If youre a bit of a
gastronomic connoiseur then id recommend touring around the Tuscany, Emilia-
Romagna and Umbria regions for the quintessential food tour.

Shop for Italian delights to take home in the Mercato delle Erbe in Bologna, then
head off to nearby Modena for a bottle of perhaps the worlds finest balsamic
vinegar.

Next pick up a delicious antipasto in the most well-known food town of Parma – see
Parma ham and Parmesan cheese.

For you first dish perhaps Umbria for some umbricelli (pasta served with shaved
truffles). If you can try to get your hands on the ever-elusive tartufo nero or black
truffle from Norcia.

For the next course perhaps a taste of the infamous bistecca alla fiorentina from
Florence or head to Perugia for a porchetta, an Umbrian speciality of suckling pig
stuffed with its own liver plus a handful of wild fennel and rosemary.

What to drink with these delights? Head to the Chianti region for a rocking red, or
Orvieto for a succulent and sharp white.

Round off this tour with dessert in Siena in the form of a slice of panforte, a hard
flatcake of candied fruits and nuts, or perhaps cantucci e vin santo (yes you guessed
it – a biscuit doused in sweet white wine), a Tuscan speciality.

Getting around Italy is relatively easy and cheap, although car hire prices are on the
rise. If you decide to take a train the regionale (local stopping trains) are much
cheaper than the diretto (fast intercity and eurostar trains) and in my opinion are far
more rewarding as you get to see more and take photos along the way. It youre in
search of good reading to help in capturing the spirit of Italy then id recommend
picking up a copy of Il Gattopardo by GT di Lampedusa, The Aeneid by Virgil, La
Storia by Elsa Morate or perhaps Grazia Deledda’s Canne al Vento.

Have fun!

You’ve decided to rent a villa, cottage or cabin for a summer vacation. Where do you look for one that is going to give you the idyllic time you and your family need? How do you know that the description you read on a web site or in an advertisement is accurate, or really gives the information you need before you part with your money? Here are a few tips to help you read between the lines and understand what the owner or agency is really telling you about the property you are interested in.

Vacation homes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are downright rustic, perhaps no more than a cabin to change in and sleep in at night, whilst others have more facilities and comforts than you have at home. Never forget though, that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, and the place the owner has loved since childhood that holds a wealth of memories for him, might not match your dream of an idyllic vacation. And, bear in mind that although you would like to spend the majority of your vacation on the dock and in the water, sometimes the weather can be very unkind and you may need to move indoors to escape the elements.

So what should you look out for in an advertisement, or on a vacation rentals website:

• Descriptions that seem unnecessarily vague – this lets the owner or agency off any accusation of misrepresentation

• Smoking permitted – means the owners smoke and the place will probably have the all-pervading odor of stale tobacco, particularly the beds.

• Pets welcome – the owners probably have dogs, so will every renter in the summer, so to feel at home, you’ll at least need a Shitzu, if not a brace of Golden Retrievers.

• Use of expressions such as: ‘Traditional cottage furnishings’ – usually means green and yellow furniture previously enjoyed by a decade of domestic pets and the occasional rodent, orange threadbare carpet sporting a range of unidentifiable stains, and beds that would not have been out of place in a Victorian workhouse.

• ‘Rustic’ – as above but with little or no inside plumbing

• ‘Short walk to the beach’ – probably indicates you will need to take your hiking boots, and a bell to ward off bears along the way.

• ‘The waterfront is a ‘bit’ weedy’ – there is no waterfront, at least there may be some in the far distance after you navigate the marsh in your canoe.

This is probably a bit unfair – I too would tell my guests if there was a little weed at the waterfront, or if the beach was not right off the deck. However, be aware that vacation homes may not be all they seem from a web advert, or from a description given to you over the phone.

The best way of satisfying yourself that you are really getting what your family wants is to get a testimonial from a previous renter, so ask the owner or agent where you can see these. If the place is as good as it is advertised, they will not have a problem with sharing that with you.

The Naval Academy Of Thailand

Phra Raja Wang Derm was the naval academy of Thailand. Prior to this, it was the official residence of His Majesty King Taksin the Great in the 18th century. It is situated on the bank of Chao Phraya River.

King Taksin regained Thailand’s independence. He made Thonburi his capital. Earlier it was called the Vichaiyen Fort and King Taksin rebuilt it and named it Vichaiprasit Fort. This was a strong fortress, located in a strategic position. It was convenient for controlling both, military operations and commercial purposes simultaneously.

King Taksin went on to extend the boundaries of the Palace.

His Majesty King Rama I became the king after King Taksin and he shifted his capital to Bangkok, where he build a new palace. The Palace of King Taksin was called the Phra Raja Wang Derm also known as the original palace. The palace had its importance due to its strategic location and some important family members of the king always stayed there. When H.M. King Rama V became the king, he gave Phra Raja Wang Derm to the Royal Thai Navy in February 23,1900. The navy converted the palace into a naval academy.

The navy renovated the palace and made it its naval academy headquarters along with a school building and King Rama V inaugurated the naval academy officially. The naval academy remained situated there till 1944 and then it was shifted to Sattahip due to the second world war.

Presently the building is used as the Office of Naval Secretariat.

Holidays in Bremen

It seems that everyone in this age of travel is caught up with the thought of summer sun in the Algarve or the alluring romance of Paris, yet there is a lot more to see in the world we live in.

It may not be everyone’s first choice for holidays but Germany certainly has its fair share of interesting and enjoyable places to visit, like the wonderful city of Bremen.

Bremen is situated in the north west of Germany on the river Wesser and has a population of roughly 360,000. With history dating back to at least the 8th century, Bremen certainly has a lot to offer the sight seeing tourist.

From the Liebfrauenkirche (Our Ladies Church), a church dating back to the 11th century, the statue of Roland the city’s protector erected in 1404, or the Schooner, a little road full of finely preserved medieval houses dating back to the 15th century, the buildings and monuments in Bremen are a sight to behold as they tower above the streets below.

For the more modern traveller who loves the hustle and bustle of city life, Bremen boasts many boutiques, designer outlets and many other shops of interest, as well as wonderful restaurants providing foods from around the globe.

With flights only taking one hour each way, Bremen can also be a great destination for a long weekend. If Bremen is a place you may wish to visit, it will also interest you to note that Bremen is also a great travel destination for those on a limited budget.

For anyone interested in the culture of Germany, you will find that the people of Germany are also friendly, warm and always willing to help. Most German people also speak English as a second language, so language should not be a barrier.

The key to a good safari is undoubtedly the quality of the guiding and how guests are hosted during their stay. Having travelled to Kenya and Botswana on previous trips I had experienced two of the best safari destinations that Africa has to offer. I’d heard that Zambia offered a more grass roots safari and was therefore eager to find out how it looked after those in search of a great wildlife experience.

Arriving in the Lower Zambezi off the back of a connecting flight from Lusaka and an overnight flight from London never puts you in the best frame of mind for starting a safari. What helps is the warm reception of a confident host and at Chiawa Camp this came in the form of Grant and Lindsay Cummings. Grant set up Chiawa, the first camp to be located in the Lower Zambezi National Park, in 1989 and as a founding member of Conservation Lower Zambezi he has taken the camp and the park from strength to the strength. His passion for the bush is evident from the moment you meet him. He encourages you to do every activity on offer to see how far the park has developed and this is before you’ve even been shown your tent. Grant’s enthusiasm passes through to the rest of his team and our guide Joe was testament to this. On our first night drive with him we were lucky enough to come across a leopard stalking some impala. We carefully followed the leopard, making sure we did not impede its hunt. As we followed Joe gave us a commentary on its hunting habits; how it stalks, how often it eats and all this whilst driving through thick woodland….. without any headlights on! The leopard’s hunt was unsuccessful on this occasion, but that didn’t matter as we had learnt so much. It is always going to be tough to follow up such a wonderful encounter. Joe did it confidently though, not by tearing round the park trying to find us something more exciting, but simply by finding us a clearing, switching off the engine and giving us a commentary on the huge starscape above our heads. Of course if an aardvark had walked by I would have named him ‘Superguide’, but that would have taken a whole lot of luck.

From the Lower Zambezi my trip took me north east to both North and South Luangwa. Our accommodation in North Luangwa was at Kutandala, a simple reed and thatch camp beside the Mwaleshi River. This is home to Rod and Gus Tether. Not only do they run and manage the camp, but they are also raising their two young sons out in the bush, no mean feat. The emphasis at Kutandala is on walking and Rod is one of the best guides that Zambia has to offer. Tracking lions on foot is one of the options, but the lions were not close by so we took a more scenic and refreshing day’s walk to the Mwaleshi Falls. On the way Rod pointed out and identified numerous birds and animals and diverted the walk to view a large pod of hippo wallowing in the river, a spectacular sight close up. When we arrived at the falls, Rod’s eyes lit up and it was almost as if he was sharing one of his favourite toys with us. Lazing in the afternoon sun after a great barbeque it was going to be difficult to muster the energy for a swim in the rock pools let alone the walk home.

Not to be outdone by Rod’s barbequing skills, Gus produces what can only be described as miracle food out of her simple bush kitchen. Kutandala, like many other camps has its own salad and vegetable garden on site so tasty, fresh produce is always at hand. However when Gus produced a homemade sorbet and brandy snaps for pudding at lunch followed by homemade ice cream in an ice bowl later that evening, I was truly amazed. I would challenge any London chef to produce such high quality food with such limited resources in such a remote location. Food is an important part of safari life and Gus’s was the best I experienced in Zambia.

Robin Pope Safaris is one of the most successful operations in South Luangwa and Nsefu Camp located on the eastern banks of the Luangwa River is in the heart of an abundant game area. Of course the wildlife has to be there, but a good guide will be able to find it and talk about it with confidence. Our guide at Nsefu was Kerry. This was the first female guide I’d seen since I was piloted and guided by a four foot ten bush lady in Zimbabwe. She had proved herself to be a superb guide so I eagerly anticipated seeing what Kerry could show us on our night drive. I’d heard that she was good on birds so I decided to put her to the test. “How about seeing if we can find some owls?” I asked as we set off. Within 10 minutes Kerry had found us an owl. “Where?” We all said, scanning the trees for a large, fluffy bird. “In that bush over there”, indicated Kerry, pointing to a bush some two hundred metres from the track. With the help of a large pair of binoculars I found our owl, a pearl-spotted owl, about the size of a dove. An impressive spot! Later on in the drive, after the sun had gone down we came across a pair of porcupines, dimly lit in the moonlight. We watched them with the aid of the spotters lamp for a while before I asked if we could get any closer. Unperturbed, by the steep bank that we and the land cruiser we going to have to tackle, Kerry set off giving a perfect demonstration of four by four driving. As we got closer Kerry turned the headlights off. “I’m still learning,” she said. “Just last week I discovered that if you turn the headlights off you can get within 20 metres of the porcupines.” As a result we got a really close up sighting of these unusual animals.

Our last destinations were Kafue National Park and the Busanga Plains, about an hour’s flying time, west of Lusaka. Busanga is the only place in Zambia where cheetahs are sighted on a regular basis. The wide open plains that flood after the December rains offer the perfect habitat during the dry months for these sleek cats, but seeking them out in the long grass takes the skill of a good guide. This time it was Lexon, who having grown up in the area knows Busanaga like the back of his hand, and together with Benson, his eagle eyed spotter, made sure that we got to see the cheetahs.

When it comes to tracking cheetahs, a guide living in camp has an obvious advantage over the average guest who spends only perhaps three or four days there. A guide will know the animals’ territory and when they were last spotted, though, of course, he does still have to find them. I was in camp at Busanga for only 16 hours, but Lexon and Benson eagerly took up the challenge. Sure enough, within an hour of arriving in camp, we found five cheetahs (a mother and her four one year old cubs) bathing in the soft rays of the setting sun. A good guide thinks long term and by giving the mother and her cubs distance in their early stages he had earned their trust. The result was five cheetah approaching the Land Rover for some of the best photo opportunities I’ve ever had.

I returned from Zambia wholly impressed by the quality of guiding and hosting. I had found that a similar standard was apparent in all of the camps that I visited. I’ve recently travelled to Botswana, certainly the most upmarket of all the safari destinations, and to Kenya visiting some of the most pioneering and conservation-minded ranches in Africa. While Zambia can’t quite match the sheer glassy waters of the Okavango Delta or the density of game of some of Kenya’s finest reserves, for me it offers a unique experience of Africa. The accommodation is comfortable without being overwhelming, the hosting is excellent and the guiding can only be described as brilliant. In Zambia natural Africa is allowed to take its place centre stage.

Cruise Ships For Sale

We all know that cruise ships are great getaway on the high seas. But did you know that cruise ships in all shapes and sizes are available for sale? Depending on your budget, you could buy a cruise ship for a steal at $2 million, or the price can rise into the millions. The price depends on the size of the ship, passenger amenities and its condition. The metal used in building the ship is important too, because rust would prove to be a negative selling point.

Most cruise ships have staterooms, public rooms, cabins, scullery (pantries), dining halls, entertainment areas and swimming pools. Space for retail outlets such as bookstores, gift, souvenir shops and hair salons, may or may not be present depending on the cruise ship. A spa, health and fitness club, and sports bar are also built into most of the cruise liners. Sanitary facilities should be examined closely in all cabins and public areas to know what basic amenities are available.

The scullery usually is equipped with all necessary appliances including ovens (conventional, convection and microwave), stoves, toasters, refrigerators, coolers, pots and pans and all the ingredients to provide the guests with the best meals during their journey.

Passenger observation decks are on most cruise ships to allow passengers to enjoy the beauty of the sea while the ship is on the move. Most of the cruise ships also come equipped with a casino housing gaming tables like blackjack, roulette, poker, dice and slot machines. There is usually a satellite connection for televisions provided in all the mega liners to entertain guests.

Some of the most important amenities on a cruise ship are located in the pump room, chiller room and office rooms. Other important cruise ship information would include the security available for guests and their valuables, provisions to store perishables, makes and models of engines; space allocated for engines, generators and the rudder rooms. New cruise ships come with electrical fittings, heavy machinery such as the engines, other machinery such as those used for steering the ship, deck machinery, air compressors, fire, bilge and other necessary pumps in the pump rooms — all the equipment required for securing and mooring the ship.

Last but not least, the cruise ship must be equipped with lifesaving equipment, as well as first aid kits to handle any emergencies. Fire extinguishers with hoses and spanners, lifebuoys, life floats, rescue boats, distress signals such as flares, common bandages, medicine chest etc., form the major part of the emergency paraphernalia.

Before buying a cruise ship, the buyer needs to do some homework to make sure that the condition of the ship is acceptable, as well as all technical matters pertaining to the ship’s ability to function properly.

There are excellent websites on the Internet that provide details about various cruise ships on sale. Browsing through these will give you a good idea of the price range and amenities to look for in a cruise before signing on an agreement.

i-CruiseShips.com Cruise Ships provides detailed information about cruise ships, alaska cruise ships, cruise ship jobs, cruise ship reviews and more. Cruise Ships is the sister site of e-CaribbeanCruises.com Cheap Caribbean Cruises.

Some of the most memorable activities your family can do together is to go on a family vacation. For most families finding the money to enjoy a yearly vacation can be difficult to achieve, one of the ways you and your family can enjoy a vacation together is to look into budget travel options.

There are two major strategies that can help families enjoy a yearly vacation together, one is to find budget travel deals that are significantly less than retail travel prices, the other strategy is to set up a travel budget in order to plan and save money through out the year for a vacation.

Regarding budget travel, it is easier than ever to find great deals for family travel. In the last decade, the internet has helped many families plan, compare prices, and ultimately save hundreds or even thousands of dollars on their travel expenses. If you are looking for a quality vacation at a low cost, you can usually find many attractive offers online.

Setting up a travel budget is another strategy. Budgeting is an easy and effective way to plan, organize and control your finances in order to save for the things that are most important to you and your family. For instance, you can set up a travel budget focusing on a yearly family vacation. Depending on your specific family needs, you can decide to put away as little as $20 each week or as much as several hundred dollars each month in order to save enough money at the end of the year to go on a quality family vacation.

Creating a travel budget should be the cornerstone of any family vacation. A budget helps you focus on the things that you would like to do most and in many cases gives you the discipline to save more money that you would normally be able to.
