When I look from different apartments in Kiev I always convince myself that it is one of the most picturesque cities in Eastern Europe. It is one of the most beautiful and charming ones as well, and, undoubtedly one of the most important political centers. But how many people know that this city with its apartments, streets, and boulevards is one of the most ancient cities in the world?

How old is Kiev?! It is not very easy to answer this question. There is not any definite resource that can indicate the precise age of this ancient city, reliable information is also missing.

Many archeologists however hold the opinion that the first settlement in Kiev can be dated back more than 15000 years ago. According to some legends, which certainly can not be verified, Kiev was founded by three brothers Kyi, Shcek and Khoriv, who named this settlement after their elder brother Kyi.

First settlers of the city were faced with constant threats form several nomadic European tribes, thus in order to protect themselves from invasion people of Kiev were building all their homes as well as churches on the right bank of the river- Dniper. This is how this ancient city was born.

During the first thousand years of its history Kiev was the political, economical and cultural center of Eastern Slavs. Its geographical location in the middle of commercial routes between Asia and Europe favored its development as a large trade center. It had been transformed into one of the most important outposts of Khazar empire (empire which comprised the tribes of semi-nomadic people of Central Asia).

Kiev was developing rapidly during Prince Volodymyr. In order to maintain and enhance his power Volodymyr decided to introduce Christianity, which since the 10th century has been an official religion in the country. First Christian church was built during the reign of Volodymyr the Great. Rapid introduction of Christianity (the building of the churches multiplied during the reign of the prince) entailed the transformation of Kiev into one of the largest centers of Christian civilization; and despite the fact that it was destroyed, rebuilt and come through several wars and revolution it still maintains and preserves its historical charm.

Today Kiev is one of the largest cities of Eastern Europe. It is one of the most romantic cities as well; it has been developing rapidly since the collapse of the Soviet Union and it is worth the while for every man to visit it just once.

Let’s use the CO2 out of the back of aircraft for laser power, missile defense and eliminating pollution. How is it possible to collect the CO2 from an aircraft engine to make a laser powered or assisted powered jet aircraft? How is it possible to use the exhaust of an aircraft to power up a CO2 Laser to shoot down a missile fired upon the aircraft? How is it possible to eliminate the exhaust of an aircraft using laser power?

Well these are indeed some interesting questions and from a physics standpoint all of this is possible but how? Well this is a problem which has perplexed me for years and well I think I have figured out how to make it all possible or at least to the point now to try out some prototypes.

Consider if you will our largest military aircraft first. C-5, C-141, C-17 or the 747 THEL in the sky laser planes. Now then what if you put behind each aircraft engine another ring, which would have a shallow concave shape to it to use the venturi affect one more time?

Now then, the CO2 exhaust we call pollution would go from the hot section of the jet engine to thru the post engine ring and be funneled and compressed. Then a laser would be point at the exhaust outer areas along the tubes inner walls compressing the CO2, creating a super vortex flow and blasting it out the back.

Imagine also if you will the possibilities for thrust vectoring for STOL or for better evading manuervabilities or even slow flight characteristics for other military operations.

We now have a super secondary propulsion system and have eliminated most of the CO2 pollution by using it up for propulsion you see. If a heat-seeking missile tries to hit the heat of the engines secondary propulsion system the laser system using a set of reflectors can redirect the beam and shoot down the missile. See Ya. Consider all this in 2006.

Limousines are the last word in elegant road travel. There are many services across America that run chartered services and you can charter limousines from them during your stay in the city.

In the beautiful city of Orlando, you can charter limousines that take care of your transportation from the moment you step out of the airport. How do you decide on the charter service that you intend to use. Well, the Internet is one great resource to compare services and obtain user reviews. Whether you need the transportation for business or pleasure, be sure to check out online resources as well as the yellow pages so that you get value for your money in terms of a luxurious, reliable, and safe mode of ground transport.

You are paying for elegant comfort otherwise you could well take the cab or the bus. Therefore, pay attention to the level of courtesy accorded to you when you are checking out a charter service. The staff of the luxury transportation service that you contact should be able to impress you with their knowledge and eagerness to serve. You may want to hire a limousine as an individual or as a corporate. In either case, an efficient application process is the first sign of a good charter service and you may want to learn a bit more about it. You are going to need drivers who know their way about town and should preferably be able to keep the passenger – you – in good spirits.

There is no end really to service standards and things such as drivers reporting on time, airport gate greeting, helping with the luggage, and curbside assistance will be standard features with some charter service providers. These are the ones you want to work for you every time you come to Orlando.

A good charter service will have a range of vehicles to suit your tastes and requirements. You may want a Sedan for a couple of days and a seven-seater van for the next few days and if you’re feeling particularly decadent, maybe a stretch limo. When you pay for luxury and class, you deserve nothing but the best. At the same time, good charter services will have their limousines insured and will comply with all safety regulations.

Once you have decided on the charter service that you want to use, you can register online, it is a simple process and payment is usually via credit cards. This done, you are ready to enjoy your ride in style.

New York, New York

Perhaps one of the most famous and popular American cities is the City of New York. You can like this city or you can hate it, but you can’t be absolutely indifferent towards it. New York is one of the largest cities in America and approximately 20 million people live there. New York is not a usual America.

This huge ant hill is not similar at all to “one-two-three sleepy” America. New York consists of five large separate from each other boroughs: Manhattan (the central and the most expensive district), Brooklyn (the Russian quarter is situated here), the Bronx, Queens and the Staten Island. Actually what kind of people come to New York? Well, New York is a city of the world scale. Everyone who comes to America tries to visit New York. This city is a classic of world’s traveling. What do we want to see there? Well certainly we want to see the symbol of freedom with our own eyes, the Statue of Liberty.

We want to watch a Broadway show in theaters that are situated on the “theatrical” district of the Broadway (many performances are shown daily and all day long. The price for the tickets varies from 40$ to 100$. You have to buy cheap tickets in advance). Tourists usually take a walk along the Downtown which is situated in the Manhattan district. It is the business centre of New York. The famous Wall Street (the embodiment of American financial power) is situated here. During their trip to New York tourists want to see Chinatown. It is a Chinese quarter with a great number of shops and restaurants. It is the best place for the cheap shopping and you can find not only Chinese goods there.

Well I came to New York with the same purposes as well as other tourists. I did not have any certain purpose or plan that’s why my trip trough the city was a pure improvisation, a happy-go-lucky trip. Moreover, I want to say that it was rather fascinating. This city really reminded me a big ant hill. Everybody runs somewhere, fusses. I had an impression that these people do not have rest at all. But my opinion was erroneous. Of course, they have a rest as well as all other people do. Everyone has a rest here according to their financial possibilities and free time. People seldom go to the theaters. You can meet in the theaters basically only those people who have arrived to the city for the first time or real theater-lovers. More often people go to the cinemas and restaurants (however a restaurant is a very expensive pleasure in New York). In summer people usually rest on the beach or play different lotteries or spent their money in casinos. Well, if you have enough money and free time, you will find the place in New York where you can spend these resources with a great pleasure.

One of the visit cards of New York is a yellow taxi as in London red buses and black taxis. The yellow taxi is a symbol of the City of New York. The fare of a taxi depends on distance. Journey is naturally more expensive at night and in days off. But approximately it is necessary to count 2$ for a mile in addition you have to pay 2$ for an embussing. As the conversation turned about the public transport it is necessary to mention that the situation with it in New York is rather complicated. If you wish to move about the city into your own car, I can warn you at once – it’s a very bad job. It is practically impossible to arrive at any place in time because the roads are very busy there.

The prices for a parking are astronomical and the probability of larceny is rather great. So you can use the public transport. The most convenient is the New York subway. Subways in New York are awful and even dangerous. However, in spite of all its disadvantages including noise and the heat, the subways are more convenient and quieter place that the streets of the city. Although the travel with the subway is the fastest way of moving, and the majority of sights of Manhattan are situated in close proximity from its stations. The payment system in New York subway is the same as in others cities. It is necessary to buy a ticket for a 1,5$ then you have to pass trough the turnstile. Of course you can spend the whole day there till you leave the subway. You can also travel by bus along the city but they move very slowly.

Well, in conclusion, I want to add that New York is just that city when the imaginative picture coincides with the reality. It’s a pity that there are few trees in the city and the only oasis is the Central Park.

So if you want to find yourself in a huge ant hill, where everybody constantly is in a hurry you have to come to New York!

One of the most used departure ports for cruise ships in the Caribbean is San Juan in Puerto Rico. We decided to arrive a day early to San Juan in order to see some sights before our cruise ship departure. San Juan, known as ‘La Ciudad Amurallada’ (the walled city), was founded in 1521 and is the oldest city under the US flag. During the 16th century, the Spanish used it as a point of departure for expeditions to the New World. Fortifications in the Old San Juan section of the city repulsed numerous attacks from the English and the Dutch during those years. Today, Old San Juan is a charming seven square block commercial and residential area with cobblestone streets.

The cruise ship terminal is actually located near the south side of Old San Juan so instead of booking a hotel in the beach resort area of San Juan, we decided to book one right in the old section for close proximity to the terminal as well as the local sights. The $17 US taxi ride from San Juan’s airport to Old San Juan was about half an hour. During the ride, I was impressed by how developed the city was compared to many other cities I’ve visited in the Caribbean. The beach high-rise hotels along the north side of San Juan were visible from the highway. Our stay for the night was at the Hotel Milano which is right on Calle Fortaleza, which is one of the major commercial streets in Old San Juan. The hotel was clean and comfortable but not luxurious which was okay with us as the price was very affordable. Its quality was probably
comparable to a Travelodge or Days Inn. A very pleasant surprise was the free continental breakfast at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant. It gave a nice view of the neighborhood from the top.

We spent the day and evening walking the many cobblestone streets and alleys in the area. There are over 400 restored colonial buildings from the 16th and 17th century here. There were also several plaza squares and parks. One of the nicest services offered in Old San Juan is a free shuttle bus which covers two different routes through the district. There was a bus stop about 1/2 block away from our hotel which was very convenient. Riding on the shuttle buses through both routes gave us a good overview of Old San Juan. We were able to stop off at several points of interest including the huge El Morro fort. After our visits to each attraction, we just had to
wait for the next bus to come by to continue our tour. In the evening, we did get lost while walking since many of the streets look very similar. But with our map, we eventually found our way back to the street where the Hotel Milano was. We decided to dine at one of the nearby restaurants for authentic Puerto Rican cuisine and were not disappointed. My lady especially adored the two different plantains we ordered.

When it was time to go to the cruise ship terminal, we just took a short five minute ride from our hotel. Our short stay in Old San Juan was definitely worthwhile and hassle free. A stay in Old San Juan is highly recommended for those who will be taking a Caribbean cruise with San Juan as the departure point. The only disappointment I had with San Juan was that I was hoping to do some scuba diving in the area but from the reports I read, the waters off the city are quite murky with
limited marine life to see. This is likely the result of San Juan being such a busy port. The decent scuba diving sites are about 2 hours east of San Juan. So perhaps in a return trip to Puerto Rico, I will plan to make a trip to the east part of the island.

Panama Weather and Num

Lately I’ve been carrying an umbrella with me wherever I go. Not the normal kind though. No, I’ve got one of the best models on the market with automatic extension and retraction. It’s red and pretty large and when people pass they feel jealous. It says to them, “I pity you and your little puny umbrella.” It’s the kind of thing that is so cool, I sometimes want to show it off when it’s not raining. On sunny days, for example, I’ll use it as portable shade, and if it’s not sunny, say if it’s overcast, I’ll simply carry it around using it to do small tricks and accomplish small tasks: pushing doorbells, tapping people on the shoulder, scratching my leg…etc.

The real reason for the umbrella here though, is because we are entering the proverbial chutzpah of rainy season. While, in my opinion, it doesn’t rain nearly enough to ruin a vacation, the season can put a literal and figurative damper on your trip. Overall, Panama has a very mild and Spring-like climate: the different regions in the country experiencing different levels of rainfall depending on their elevation. Coastal areas, in short, see higher humidity levels than the central mountainous regions. On average though, temperatures range from low 80’s to mid 90’s (Fahrenheit), a phenomenon known to science geeks and me as Tageszeitenklima. Panama, similar to a crummy sitcom, only experiences two seasons. Its dry season, or summer, runs from December through April. Its rainy season, or winter, taking over from May until November. Neither season is too extreme.

We can go for days without rain, but when the clouds decide it’s time, the torrential downpour can make you very very wet. That is, unless you’re prepared for it. Because I am so experienced in the industry of canopies and umbrellas, people have been asking me of late, what should I look for in an umbrella? At this point I usually answer, “You can’t fit anything in an umbrella silly.” This I say for laughs.

While a good umbrella can transform a rainy day into your own little oasis for reading or writing or playing Chutes and Ladders, a bad umbrella can be equally devastating. I met with an umbrella vendor downtown the other day; a small Asian man who introduced himself as Num (as in numchuck). He was quiet and his movements were extremely slow, rivaling the instinct and reflex of a hermit crab. He taught me the following information on materials which I will share with you.

Materials: Shade cloth is a good option for certain stylish people, as it blocks 90 to 95 percent of UV rays and is only semi-water resistant. PVC, on the other hand blocks out 100 percent of UV rays and lets in no water, which could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on what you want from your umbrella. Num says canvas is a very durable fabric and it effectively blocks out the sun, but you’d need to treat it to make it waterproof: something that umbrella neophytes may not be ready for. It is possible to buy an umbrella with a thatched canopy but Num suggests against it, claiming that they are bad luck.

While Penguin in the Batman movies used to conceal a variety of weapons in his umbrella, Num says that these sorts of things can get you into trouble. He reeled off a story about some exiled writer who was assassinated in England by a poison dart filled with ricin and fired from an umbrella sometime back in the nineteen-seventies.

“How do you know so much about umbrellas?” I asked Num.
He shook his head and looked at me with this pitiful look as if to say, where have you been holed up all your life? With a little prodding and some double-stuffed Oreo cookies, I found out that 1,700 years ago, one of Num’s great Chinese ancestors invented the damn thing. He was part of something called the Cao Wei Dynasty in ancient China and he helped bring his design to the West via the Silk Route.

”Pretty interesting stuff Num,” I said. At this point, he was starting to like me, starting to reveal more umbrella information and humor.

Num is sort of like me, in the sense that he likes to bring an umbrella everywhere, however this precaution, this preventative measure onetime backfired on him. You see, he decided to take all his umbrellas and have them repaired at whatever kind of shop repairs umbrellas. He told me that on the way home from this shop, he got on the bus and happened to sit down next to an elderly woman with an umbrella of her own. Out of instinct, out of pure habit, Num grasped the umbrella—an action which caused the woman to yell “stop, thief!”

He quickly surrendered the umbrella and was so embarrassed that he got off the bus and walked the whole way home. Poor Num, right?

Well, the next week he went to shop to pick up his bundle of repaired umbrellas, and on the way home, happened to sit down next to the exact same old lady he had so embarrassingly met before. “She looked at me,” Num said, “And she gave me this nasty stare and said ‘had a good day, huh?’” He laughed hysterically at this joke for some time, before I said farewell and left. Num was a crackerjack but he taught me a lot.

Booking a Language Study Trip

You probably know by now that one of my personal passions is languages. I truly love the mental challenge of learning foreign languages and I think even a tiny amount of local language knowledge makes a stay in a foreign country so much more pleasant. It allows us to communicate with the locals in their language, and even if we don’t speak their language well, as long as we make an effort, they really appreciate it.

My favourite language of all is Spanish, so I am planning to go on a language study trip myself. As it looks right now I will be spending the first 2 weeks of April at the University of Havana, studying Spanish and immersing myself in the local culture.

I did a fair bit of research before deciding on this particular language study program. I located quite a few websites out there for individual language schools, and in addition to that, there are language course-booking websites, many of which allow you to search by language and/or country. The most popular languages offered by these booking websites include English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, but Chinese, Greek, Polish, Russian and Turkish and others more are also available.

There are a few basic things to keep in mind when booking a language study trip:

Duration:
How long do you want to stay? One week, one month, a year or anything in between?

Format:

Most language schools offer a standard program, which usually consists of 3 or 4 hours of instruction in the morning where the student has the afternoon off. Intensive programs are also offered where 1 to 3 additional lectures are added on in the afternoon. Examination preparation courses as well as one-on-one courses round out the course program and sometimes schools offer special purpose language courses, e.g. business language etc.

Class size:

The smaller the better. Obviously you will get a better learning experience and more attention from the teacher with less people. A lot of schools offer a standard class size of 8 to 12 students.

Accommodation:

A popular type of accommodation for language study programs abroad is staying with a host family, often referred to as “homestay”. Language students stay in a private room in the home of a local family and often participate in family activities, dinners and excursions. This approach offers the advantage of full immersion in the culture, from a linguistic and social point of view. Other accommodation options include shared student apartments or hotels.

Excursions and social events:

Schools generally offer excursions and social events to the foreign language students, some of which may be included in the package prices, others may cost extra. This is a chance to go beyond language learning and to get to know the local culture.

Included services:

When looking at prices, be careful to compare apples to apples. Some programs have inscription fees over and above tuition fees. Check whether airport transfers, meals or study materials are included in the package.

The race to build the biggest and best cruise ship continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Cruise holidays are one of the most popular holiday alternatives for people and what once was considered as an out of reach vacation for many low to middle income earners, sailing the high seas on board a luxury liner anywhere in the world is now a reality for most.

Cheap Cruise Due Diligence

Conducting a cheap cruise review before booking a holiday is an art form that many now perform quite expertly. Seeking out the best deals is not as difficult as it once was. Why? Because there is so much available in the area of sea travel that major companies will often provide outstanding incentives and opportunities to consumers that it’s hard for many to ignore some of the deals being offered.

Once, taking a cruise would have been the holiday of a lifetime. Now, enjoying the amenities and luxuries on board ships is not just a once a year excursion for many: because of the discount deals available, people can now consider sailing on board a ship a yearly event. If you aren’t quite sure on how to find those cheap cruise deals, here are some tips on how to locate them.

The Cheap Cruise Rush

Be aware that the term last minute cruise doesn’t mean booking only days before a ship is due to depart. The term generally means booking up to 90 days in advance. Is this a good thing? Well, it’s generally the procedure to follow. If you have your heart set on a particular holiday and have budgeted for it then yes, go ahead and book it. It means you’ll have plenty of time to prepare.

Savvy last minute cheap cruise hunters will generally wait until, well, the last minute. They’re experienced enough to know that the best deals are always available close to departure time. Cruise lines realise that it’s much more beneficial for them to fill a room at a discount price rather than let it sit empty. Getting people on board is their main priority because “what they miss on the round-a-bout, they’ll pick up on the swings!”

You Need To Get Online

So how can you find these cheap cruise deals? Well, one of the best ways is to go online and check out a companies website. You won’t generally see these late minute deals plastered all over the written or electronic press. In some cases, you could even pick up a great deal on some of the better state or balcony rooms particularly if they are still empty and leaving them vacant is not an option.

Don’t be afraid to sign up for a company’s newsletter if they have one. Even better, getting on a mailing list will keep you up-to-date with all the latest offerings. A phone call on a regular basis will also enable you to keep abreast of any last minute cheap cruise deals. I’ve always considered these type of deals similar in some respects to flight upgrades.

Panama has long been the crossroads of the new world and because of the country’s main interest, the Panama Canal, other sectors of the economy have been largely overlooked. With such intense focus on international trade and the canal, many of Panama’s coastal regions and natural wonders have been bypassed, opening doors for tremendous new opportunities and setting stage for large-scale tourism growth. Using its northern neighbor Costa Rica as an example, the potential for tourism in Panama is staggering.

Of its stunning islands, virgin rainforests, and pristine beaches, perhaps the most amazing feature of Panama is the secrecy that it has maintained. “I’ve seen so many hidden gems in Panama that just don’t exist in real life,” one recent visitor said. “Secluded beaches, private underwater snorkeling kingdoms, breezy island cabanas, these are things from the pages of National Geographic, and I certainly never thought I’d get to see them in my lifetime.” Most visitors to Panama feel the same way: like they are in on a traveling secret, the rest of the world is yet to discover.

Newcomers to Panama are delighted to find friendly locals, a low cost of living, high safety standards, and the use of the US Dollar. The country also holds a vast amount of history, represented most noticeably in its architecture, indigenous people, and strong sense of identity. There are several airport hubs in the USA which fly directly into Panama City and with the increase of tourism, more are expected to arise.

Provinces like Bocas del Toro (an island archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast) are attracting more and more travelers from across the globe. Café’s, restaurants and bars, filled with the sounds of different languages and the traits different countries. Bocas del Toro offers some of the country’s best water activities—such as snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing—along with a rustic island lifestyle that is hard not to fall in love with.

One of the most up-and-coming spots in Bocas del Toro is Tranquilo Bay: a rainforest-immersed eco-resort which overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Known for their adventure tours, quaint bungalows, and first-rate service, Tranquilo Bay offers a little piece of paradise and if you make it out there, chances are, you wont want to leave.
